One bet. One season. One shot at forever.

Maddox Cole has spent fourteen seasons chasing the Stanley Cup. At thirty-four, he’s running out of time—and patience. The last thing he needs is a hotshot rookie disrupting his locker room and challenging his authority.

Casey Quinn has been traded twice in two years. He’s talented, trouble, and determined to prove everyone wrong. When he lands in Chicago, he expects hostility from the veteran captain. What he doesn’t expect is the white-hot tension that sparks every time they collide.

After a furious confrontation turns into something else entirely, they make a dangerous bet: whoever outscores the other controls what happens off the ice. No feelings. No complications. Just two rivals burning off steam.

But the scoreboard doesn’t lie. And neither do their hearts.

As the competition heats up and the playoffs loom, Maddox and Casey discover that the line between hate and love is thinner than they thought. With careers, reputations, and the Stanley Cup on the line, they’ll have to decide what matters more: winning the game, or winning each other.

Chapter One: Dead Weight

MADDOX

The kid walked into my locker room like he owned the place.

That was the first thing I noticed about Casey Quinn—the audacity. The absolute, unearned confidence radiating off him like cheap cologne. He strolled past the threshold of the Chicago Sentinels’ inner sanctum with his chin up and his shoulders back, some overpriced iced coffee sweating in his grip, looking for all the world like he hadn’t just been traded for the second time in two years.

I hated him immediately.

Not because of the trade itself—I’d been in this league long enough to know that players were currency, shuffled around balance sheets like poker chips. And not because Vegas had clearly given up on him, shipping him off for a second-round pick and a warm body to fill out their AHL roster. That kind of desperation move happened every season.

No, I hated Casey Quinn because of the way he looked at me.

Like he was sizing me up. Like he was calculating exactly how long it would take to knock me off my throne.

Cute, I thought, holding his stare until something flickered behind those green eyes. Let him try.

The night Maddox hit 1000 points, they raised the stakes. Whoever comes first loses—and the loser submits completely. Ten rounds of edging. One explosive finish. This scene didn’t make it into the book.
