Chapter One: New Ice
The Chicago Cobras’ practice facility smelled like every other rink I’d ever been in: cold rubber, stale sweat, and the particular metallic tang of ice that never quite left your lungs.
Home, my brain supplied. Then immediately: Not anymore.
I shouldered my equipment bag and stepped through the double doors, bracing myself for whatever welcome committee awaited. In my experience, there were two types of reactions when a player like me walked into a new locker room. Fear or hostility. Sometimes both.
The “Grim Reaper” had that effect on people.
The nickname had followed me from juniors, back when I first realized that my size and willingness to drop gloves made me valuable in ways my skating never would. Six-foot-five, two-forty, and a face that had stopped too many fists to be called handsome—I was built for intimidation. For protection. For the kind of dirty work that let the pretty boys like Julian Vane skate untouched.
Speaking of which.
He was there when I walked in. Of course he was. Captain’s prerogative to be first on the ice and last to leave, or so I’d heard. Julian Vane sat at the far end of the locker room, golden hair still damp from what must have been an early workout, scrolling through his phone with the casual arrogance of someone who’d never had to fight for anything in his life.
Our eyes met.
