The windshield wipers were losing.
Sloane Mercer watched them fight their pathetic battle—back and forth, back and forth—while snow accumulated faster than the blades could clear it. Her knuckles had gone white on the steering wheel somewhere around hour three, and her jaw ached from clenching it since she’d crossed the state line.
“—and I’m just saying, maybe driving into a blizzard alone isn’t the healthiest coping mechanism.” Marcus’s voice crackled through the Bluetooth, equal parts concern and gentle mockery. “There are apps for that now. Meditation. Therapy. Anything that doesn’t involve potential frostbite.”
“I’m not coping. I’m handling business.” Sloane leaned forward, squinting through the windshield at what she hoped was still a road. The GPS had given up forty minutes ago. “Two days, Marcus. Sign the papers, meet the realtor, sell my dead grandmother’s cabin, and I’m back in civilization.”
The call dropped.
Of course it did.
She jabbed at the screen, but the signal bars had flatlined into nothing. The rental car’s display showed the outside temperature as six degrees, which felt generous given that the heater was blasting and she could still see her breath.
Her phone buzzed—a notification pushing through on whatever whisper of signal remained. Google Alert: Sloane Mercer.
She didn’t have to look. She knew what it would be. Another thinkpiece, another hot take, another gleeful dissection of her professional corpse.
Sloane deleted the app. Not the notification. The entire app.
