Chapter One: The Disaster
The paint was still wet on Lily Hart’s fingers when she realized she was about to be homeless.
She stood in the cramped hallway of her apartment building, the eviction notice crumpled in her hand, and tried to remember how to breathe. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in that sickly yellow glow that made even good news feel like a death sentence.
This was not good news.
Thirty days. She had thirty days to come up with three months of back rent or find somewhere else to live. Thirty days to figure out how her life had gone so spectacularly sideways.
You know exactly how, a voice in her head whispered. You trusted the wrong person. Again.
Lily shoved the notice into her bag, smearing cerulean blue across the paper. She’d deal with it later. She’d deal with everything later. Right now, she had exactly forty-five minutes to get across town for a job interview that could—maybe—save her from complete financial ruin.
The ad had been vague. “Live-in nanny needed for five-year-old girl. Immediate start. Must be comfortable with unconventional hours and creative problem-solving.”
