Chapter One: Crash Landing
The first time Sutton Vance saw Rhett Callahan, he was yelling at her.
To be fair, she had just crashed into his hockey practice. But still. Yelling seemed excessive.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Sutton scrambled to her feet, her figure skating blades scraping against the ice in a way that made her wince. She’d been so lost in her own head—replaying her mother’s latest critique, the federation’s barely veiled disappointment, the slow-motion collapse of everything she’d worked for—that she hadn’t noticed the ice time had changed.
Or that she was now standing in the middle of a hockey rink surrounded by very large, very angry men.
“I’m skating,” she said, because apparently her survival instincts were broken. “Or I was, until you interrupted me.”
The man in front of her—tall, broad-shouldered, with a jaw that could cut glass and eyes the color of a winter storm—stared at her like she’d grown a second head.
“Interrupted you?” He gestured around the rink, where at least a dozen players had stopped mid-drill to watch the confrontation. “This is our ice time. Has been for the past—” He checked his watch. “Forty-five minutes.”
