He said “make me.” The detective should have walked away.
A flirty bartender gets hauled in after a bar fight he didn’t start—and can’t stop needling the granite-jawed detective assigned to his case. When the investigation puts Jamie in the crosshairs of a dangerous crew, the only safe house available is Marcus’s apartment. Now they’re locked in together every night, and “interrogation” becomes a game of how far the detective will go to get what he wants… and how much the suspect can take before he begs.
Marcus Hale doesn’t do messy. He doesn’t do loud, or chaos, or mouthy bartenders who smell like lime and trouble. He definitely doesn’t pin suspects to walls and think about what their smart mouth would look like wrapped around him.
Jamie Rossi doesn’t do cops. He doesn’t do rules, or curfews, or six-foot-two walls of muscle who look at him like he’s a problem to solve. He definitely doesn’t fantasize about what those handcuffs would feel like off the clock.
But with a killer circling closer and the only safe place being Marcus’s bed, the line between protection and possession blurs every night. And when the cuffs come out, neither of them is interested in Miranda rights.

Chapter One
The coffee tastes like regret and burnt rubber, but I drink it anyway because it’s the only warm thing in this building that doesn’t talk back.
Eleven-fourteen PM on a Friday, and I’m the last detective in the bullpen. The fluorescent lights buzz overhead like trapped insects—one of them flickers every nine seconds. I’ve counted.
Dominic Reyes. Twenty-four years old. Dark hair, easy smile, worked as a bartender at a place called The Roost downtown. Found in the alley behind a nightclub two years ago, slumped against a dumpster like someone had tossed him out with the trash. Ruling: accidental overdose. Case closed.
Except it wasn’t accidental, and the case isn’t closed. Not for me.
“Hale.” Sergeant Chen appears at the edge of my desk. “Go home.”
The radio crackles. All units, 10-10 in progress at 412 Lexington, The Roost bar and lounge.
The Roost. Same bar. Same goddamn bar.
Behind the bar, there’s a man. Dark curls, olive skin, a nose ring that catches the neon. He’s wearing a crop top with blood on it and glitter on his cheekbones. He looks like the most chaotic thing I have ever seen.
“They’re sending detectives for bar fights now? I’m flattered.”
“I need a statement.”
“I need a new mirror and a Xanax, but we can’t all get what we want, Detective Hale. All jawline and disappointment.”
In the cruiser, he winks through the rearview mirror. “I like you. You’re like a brick wall with a badge.”
“Lead the way, Detective. I promise to be on my worst behavior.”
My hands are tight on the steering wheel. My pulse is doing something it hasn’t done in years. The fluorescent lights of the precinct swallow us both, and the night is just getting started.
