The only voice that controls him at 200 mph is even more commanding behind a locked hotel-room door.

A reckless championship driver. A silver-templed strategist who never raises his voice. A secret that could destroy them both.

Luca Moretti can outdrive anyone on the grid. Listening? That’s the problem. After torching another title with his own recklessness, the fastest man in the Continental Championship gets a new race strategist: Adrian Shaw. Forty-two. Silver at the temples. Famous for never raising his voice — because he’s never once needed to.

Luca doesn’t take orders. Then Adrian’s voice comes through his headset — hold position, wait for it, now — and Luca wins for the first time all season. The trouble is what that voice does to him after the checkered flag.

Their first time is an argument that catches fire. Their second comes with rules. Soon the same quiet commands turning Luca into a championship contender are following him into hotel rooms on four continents — and Luca, who has never surrendered anything in his life, learns exactly how good it feels to hand one man the wheel.

But motorsport records everything. When eleven seconds of leaked radio audio threaten the title, the team, and Adrian’s career, Adrian makes one final call without him. Luca has spent his whole life proving nobody controls him. Now he has to prove something harder: that trusting the man he loves was his choice all along — and so is winning.

Chapter One: Faster Than Good Judgment

LUCA

Three corners left and I could taste it.

Not the win — the win was still theoretical, a number on a timing screen somewhere behind me. What I tasted was the gap. Two tenths. Maybe three. Sebastian Krane’s rear wing shimmering in the heat haze ahead of me like something I could reach out and peel apart with my bare hands.

“Luca, hold position. Tires are gone. Repeat — hold position, bring it home P2.”

My strategist’s voice. Matteo. Nice guy. Good engineer. Completely incapable of understanding what it felt like to sit two tenths behind Sebastian Krane with three corners between me and everything I’d spent the entire winter promising myself.

“Luca, acknowledge.”

The straight opened up in front of me, and I pulled out of the slipstream, felt the downforce bite as I broke into clean air. Krane’s car twitched — a micro-correction, which meant he’d seen me. Good. I wanted him nervous. I wanted his mirrors full of me.

I pressed the radio button. “I’ve got him.”

I was already committed. Turn fourteen, a long right-hander that tightened on exit. I braked later than physics recommended, felt the front lock for a heartbeat — the tire screaming, a vibration hammering up through the column — and shoved the car alongside Krane’s on the inside.

For one beautiful, suspended half-second, I was ahead.

Then the flat-spot hit.

The front right, ruined by that locked brake, started bouncing against the asphalt like a drunk trying to walk a straight line. The gap went from two tenths to eight tenths in the space of a breath. Two more cars passed me before the checkered flag.

Fourth. After leading for thirty-seven laps. After qualifying second.

My father would have made the pass. The thought arrived the way it always did — uninvited, certain, and impossible to argue with because the man wasn’t alive to disappoint me.

Marco Moretti would have made the pass. Marco Moretti drove like the car was an extension of his body and every corner was the last one he’d ever see. Marco Moretti died at forty-one during a private test because he took a corner the way he took every corner — flat out, no hesitation, no margin.

I was fourteen. I was in school. Gianna came to get me, and she didn’t say anything in the car.

That was thirteen years ago, and I still drove like him. Everyone said so. Like father, like son. The Moretti gene. Born to race.

What nobody ever said was that driving like Marco Moretti meant driving like a man who ran out of road.

My phone buzzed. Helena Voss.

Strategy department restructured effective immediately. Changes to your race team. Report to HQ Monday 9am. Non-negotiable.

I sat on the edge of the bed in a towel, holding my father’s watch in one hand and Helena’s message in the other, and wondered whether this was the year the sport finally ran out of patience with me.

Monday. Nine a.m. Whatever they were restructuring, I’d survive it. That was the Moretti way — burn it down and walk out of the fire looking spectacular.

The approach had worked for my father right up until the moment it didn’t.

The reckless driver. The strategist who never raises his voice. The headset that changes everything. Keep reading — Pole Position, Bottom Line is available now.
