Cross the Line
Dane had lived with Kai for two years and spent about eighteen months of it pretending he didn’t watch him cross the apartment.
He had reasons ready if anyone ever asked. Nobody asked. That was the thing about being the straight roommate — you got the benefit of the doubt you didn’t deserve, right up until the night you ran out of doubt yourself.
It was late, a movie neither of them was watching, Kai’s leg warm against his on the couch. Kai, who was easy in his own skin in a way Dane had never once managed — out since seventeen, and currently looking at Dane like he’d clocked the watching a long, long time ago.
“You’re doing it again,” Kai said quietly.
“Doing what.”
“That thing where you look at me and then get mad at yourself for it.” Kai turned to face him, unhurried, careful. “I’m not going to push you, Dane. But I’m done pretending I don’t see it. So tell me I’m wrong, and I’ll drop it for good.”
Dane opened his mouth to say you’re wrong. Two years of practice. It should have been easy.
“I don’t want to say that,” he heard himself say instead, low and rough. “That’s the problem. I’ve been trying to say it for eighteen months and I can’t anymore.”
Kai went very still. “Then be sure. I’m not doing this if it’s a maybe, and I’m not doing it if you’re going to hate me — or yourself — in the morning.”
“I’m not going to hate you.” Dane’s pulse was a war drum. “I’ve never done this. With a guy. I don’t know what I’m doing. But I’ve wanted to for longer than I’ve been willing to admit, and if you ask me one more time whether I’m sure, I’m going to lose my nerve.”
“Okay.” And Kai smiled — soft, certain — and closed the space between them.
The first kiss undid something Dane had been white-knuckling for two years. Kai kissed him slow, a hand curving warm against his jaw, leaving him every chance to pull back — and Dane didn’t pull back. He pushed in, fisting a hand in Kai’s shirt, kissing him like a man finally allowed to stop lying, and Kai made a low sound that Dane felt everywhere.
“There you go,” Kai murmured against his mouth. “I’ve got you. We go as slow as you need. Tell me what you want.”
“You.” Dane didn’t recognize his own voice. “I don’t know all the words for it yet. I want you to show me.”
“I can do that.” Kai got him back against the arm of the couch, unhurried and sure, and started showing him — checking every new thing with a rough this okay?, waiting for Dane’s ragged yeah — God, yes before he gave him more, walking him across every line Dane had spent two years insisting wasn’t there. And on the far side of it there was none of the panic he’d braced for — just Kai, and heat, and the bright strange relief of a man finding out the truth about himself in the best possible way.
After, sprawled and wrecked and tangled in the too-small space, Dane started to laugh — quiet, disbelieving.
“Something funny?” Kai asked, but he was smiling.
“Two years,” Dane said to the ceiling. “The things I told myself for two years.”
“Yeah, well.” Kai propped up on an elbow and looked down at him, the easy confidence gone gentle. “For what it’s worth — you don’t have to have all the words yet. You just have to let me stay.”
Dane looked at the man he’d been not-watching for two years and felt the last of the lie leave him. “Stay,” he said. “That one I’ve got.”
