Chapter One: Flooded Out
The water was three inches deep and smelled like rust.
Liam stood in the middle of what used to be his living room, holding a soggy copy of The Count of Monte Cristo that he’d been almost done with for three years, and thought: This is what I get for being a predictable motherfucker.
The pipe had burst sometime between his morning skate and his afternoon nap. He’d come home to a hallway that sounded like a creek and an apartment that looked like one. The carpet squelched under his feet. His couch was a sponge. His TV still worked, which felt like a personal insult: nothing to sit on, but hey, he could watch SportsCenter standing up in a wading pool.
His landlord responded to six increasingly urgent photos with: yeah thats a problem gonna be 6-8 weeks minimum insurance has to come out first sorry man
Six to eight weeks. Playoffs started in ten days.
Then Jay Morales texted: I got a spare room. Two-bedroom, close to the arena. He can crash as long as he needs.
Followed by: Fair warning, I have plants and they have names. Non-negotiable.
“I don’t do roommates,” Liam said.
“You do now.”
Jay’s apartment looked like someone actually lived in it. Plants everywhere. Art on the walls. Fairy lights tracing the ceiling. A cactus named Gerald. A monstera named Dolores. A snake plant named Enrique “because he’s tall and dramatic.”
They set ground rules. No shoes on the hardwood. No touching the record player. No complications.
“No complications,” Liam agreed.
That night, he lay in the borrowed bed and listened to Jay’s music through the wall — something Spanish and soft — and told himself this was temporary.
This is temporary. This is fine. This is nothing.
He almost believed it.
