Skate on dark ice, header image for a free MM hockey rivals romance scene by Chase Power

A free one today with some bite to it. This scene’s from Chase Power — MM, two rival captains, and the specific heat of enemies who are exactly evenly matched and finally out of excuses. If the voice lands, the full catalog is free with Kindle Unlimited, and every book page has a first chapter waiting.

Heads up: explicit scene, readers 18 and over. Two consenting adults, an enemies-to-lovers dynamic, enthusiastic yes-means-yes throughout. If that’s not your speed today, our reading guides are a gentler stop.

Overtime

They’d put each other in the penalty box six times this season, and Kade Bishop was starting to suspect that at least three of those had been on purpose.

The teams were stuck in the same hotel — a snowed-in tarmac, two flights cancelled, and the cruel arithmetic of a chain that had exactly enough rooms if everyone doubled up. Kade had come down to the empty bar at midnight for the specific pleasure of drinking alone after a one-goal loss, and instead he’d found Nico Vasiliev already at the counter, still in a team hoodie, nursing something amber and looking like a man who’d also come down here to not talk to anyone.

“Of course,” Kade said.

“Of course,” Nico agreed, not looking over. The captain of the team that had just beaten them. Six-two of infuriating composure, the best defenseman in the division, and the single most punchable smirk Kade had spent an entire season thinking about far more than was reasonable.

Kade sat down two stools away on principle. The bartender was long gone; there was a bottle and an honor-system notepad. They drank in silence for a while, the kind that had weight to it.

“That crosscheck in the third was garbage,” Kade said finally.

“That dive you took selling it was worse.” Now Nico looked over, and there it was — the smirk, the challenge, the thing that had been crackling between them at every face-off since October. “You’ve been running your mouth at me for months, Bishop. All season. You want to tell me what that’s actually about?”

“It’s about you being a cheap-shot artist with a good publicist.”

“It’s not, though.” Nico set his glass down and turned on the stool to face him fully, unhurried, certain, closing the two-stool gap Kade had left like it was an insult he intended to correct. “I’ve been in a lot of rivalries. They don’t feel like this one. So either I’m wrong — and you can tell me I’m wrong, and I’ll go back to my room and we never mention it — or we stop pretending.”

Kade’s pulse was doing something undignified. “You think a lot of yourself.”

“Tell me I’m wrong, Bishop.” Low, even, close now. “Say it and I’m gone.”

Kade didn’t say it. He closed the last of the distance himself, because he’d be damned if he let Vasiliev have even that, and grabbed a fistful of that stupid hoodie and hauled him in — and Nico met him exactly halfway, because of course he did, because that was the entire problem with him.

The kiss was a fight neither of them was trying to win gently. Nico’s hand fisted in Kade’s collar; Kade shoved off the stool and backed him into the bar and Nico let him, then turned it, walking Kade the other way toward the wall by the shuttered service hatch, giving up exactly no ground. It was all teeth and heat and a season of chirping finally cashing out, and when Kade broke away to breathe they were both grinning like idiots and furious about it.

“Upstairs,” Nico said against his mouth. “I’ve got a single. Rank has privileges.”

“This changes nothing on the ice.”

“God, I hope not.” Nico pulled back just far enough to look at him, and the smirk softened by a degree into something that was still a challenge but warmer. “You’re sure. Say it plainly, because I’m not doing this on a maybe.”

“I’m sure. Move before I change my mind.” Kade shoved him toward the elevator, and Nico laughed — a real one, low and surprised — and caught his wrist and pulled him along.

Low light, section break

The door had barely shut before they were on each other again — still competing, still refusing to give an inch, and both discovering that being evenly matched was its own particular kind of unbearable. Every time one of them tried to take control the other took it right back, and somewhere in the middle of it the fury burned off into something breathless and laughing and a lot more honest, checked at every turn with a rough this okay? and answered every time with a yeah — don’t stop, two men who’d spent a whole season pretending finally, gracelessly, giving it up.

After, they lay sideways across a bed that was decidedly built for one, tangled up because there was no other option, both of them staring at the ceiling and breathing hard.

“Six penalty boxes,” Kade said. “All season. You could’ve just said something.”

“So could you.” Nico turned his head, and the smirk was there but the eyes under it weren’t joking. “We’ve got a rematch in three weeks.”

“I’m still going to beat you.”

“You’re welcome to try.” Nico pulled him in anyway, certain as ever, and Kade — against every instinct he had where this man was concerned — let him. “This wasn’t a one-night thing. I want that on the record before you overthink it.”

Kade meant to argue, on principle. What came out instead was: “…Yeah. On the record.”

Outside, the snow kept both their flights on the ground, and neither of them complained about it once.
