Benji had seen Adrian block slapshots with his face. He’d seen Adrian play twenty-six minutes on bruised ribs without flinching. He’d seen Adrian stand at the blue line during a five-on-three penalty kill with thirty seconds left in a playoff game and look like a man waiting for a bus.
And now Adrian was sitting in the passenger seat of Benji’s cracked-windshield Civic, three miles from Rosa Cruz’s house in Duluth, Minnesota, gripping the door handle like the car was about to make a water landing.
“You’re white-knuckling my car,” Benji said.
“I’m holding the door.”
“You’re holding the door like it owes you money. Relax. She’s a four-eleven nurse from Duluth. She’s not a final boss.”
“She raised you. She’s absolutely a final boss.”
