The delivery guys left at four-fifteen, and the bed frame was wrong.

Not wrong-wrong. Wrong in the way that only mattered to Elena — the walnut was darker than the sample, more espresso than honey, and the headboard had a slight curve she hadn’t expected.

“It’s beautiful,” Tessa said from the doorway, arms crossed, watching Elena circle the frame like a skeptical art critic.

“The grain is different on the left side.”

“It’s a bed frame. We’re going to put a mattress on it and then we’re going to be on the mattress. No one is going to be examining the wood grain.”

“You said we,” Elena said. “You said ‘we’re going to put a mattress on it.’ We.”

Tessa’s composure softened. “I practically live here. I have a toothbrush. I have three drawers. The bodega lady calls me ‘the tall one.’”

Elena crossed the room and put her hands on Tessa’s waist. “Move in. Officially. Bring the rest of your clothes. Cancel your lease. Put your name on the buzzer.”

“Elena, this apartment is four hundred and twelve square feet.”

“I know. I measured.”

Elena kissed her. Because Tessa was listing logistical objections to a question that wasn’t logistical, and the only appropriate response was to put her mouth on Tessa’s mouth and make her stop thinking about square footage.

Tessa stopped thinking about square footage.

The kiss deepened. Elena’s hands slid from Tessa’s waist to her back. Tessa’s hands found Elena’s face — cupping her jaw, holding her with that precise, focused attention that still made Elena’s knees unreliable.

“Is this your strategy?” Tessa murmured against her mouth. “Kiss me until I agree?”

“Is it working?”

“It’s extremely effective and I resent it.”

Tessa’s mouth found the spot below Elena’s ear. She kissed it — open-mouthed, wet, with a scrape of teeth that made Elena’s whole body tighten.

“We have a new bed,” Elena breathed. “We should probably —”

“Christen it?”

“I was going to say test the structural integrity.”

Tessa pulled Elena’s shirt over her head. Three months in and she still did this with a kind of reverence — the unhurried attention of a woman who knew she had time. They had time. That was the miracle. No countdown. No deadline. No fiancé sleeping down the hall.

They fell onto the new bed. The mattress bounced — properly, for the first time, supported by slats and a frame instead of bare floor.

Elena straddled Tessa. Pinned her wrists above her head against the new headboard — the slightly-wrong walnut one with the unexpected curve that suddenly seemed like the best design decision in the history of furniture.

“Ours,” Tessa said. “This is ours.”

They undressed each other with the confident choreography of two people who’d memorized every zipper and preference. Naked. Both of them. On the new bed. In the late afternoon light that turned the white walls gold.

Elena kissed down Tessa’s body. She took her time — mouth on her throat, her collarbones, her breasts. She sucked Tessa’s nipple into her mouth and felt Tessa arch beneath her — low, helpless, the sound of a woman who’d spent her whole life being composed finally letting someone hear her unraveled.

She settled between Tessa’s legs. “I love you,” Elena said. Simply. Because she could.

“I love you too. Now please stop talking and —”

Elena put her mouth on her.

She’d gotten good at this. Three months of practice. She used everything she knew. She licked through Tessa’s folds with slow, deliberate strokes, circled her clit with the precise rhythm she’d perfected, sealed her lips and sucked. She slid two fingers inside — deep, curling — and fucked her slowly while her tongue worked.

“Elena — God — right there — don’t — fuck — I’m going to —”

Tessa came with her hand in Elena’s hair and Elena’s name on her lips and the headboard creaking under her grip. Hard and loud and without restraint. When it was over she pulled Elena up and kissed her and said, “The bed passes the structural test.”

Elena was still laughing when Tessa flipped her.

Tessa settled between Elena’s thighs and thought: I can’t believe this is my life.

She kissed Elena’s mouth. Her jaw. The spot below her ear. She kissed down Elena’s neck and between her breasts. She took her time with each one — tongue circling, teeth grazing, sucking until Elena’s back arched and the sounds she made filled the apartment.

She breathed against Elena’s center — hot, deliberate, close but not touching.

“Tessa. Please.”

“Please what?”

“I want to hear you say it.”

“Put your mouth on me. I want your tongue on my clit and your fingers inside me and I want to come on this bed screaming your name. Is that specific enough?”

She gave Elena exactly what she asked for. Her mouth — hot, wet, focused — tongue working her clit with devastating precision. She slid two fingers inside and curled them forward and Elena cried out — loud, uninhibited, the cry of a woman who didn’t have to be quiet for anyone.

She fucked her deeply, thoroughly, with patient intensity. She brought Elena to the edge and held her there until Elena was shaking and cursing and saying please in a voice barely recognizable.

Then she let her fall.

Elena came with Tessa’s name in her throat and the new bed frame groaning beneath them. Long, rolling waves that Tessa felt from the inside.

“Move in with me,” Elena said against Tessa’s neck.

“You already asked me that.”

“I’m asking again. Post-orgasm. When I’m most honest.”

“Yes. Obviously yes. I’ll cancel my lease tomorrow.”

“The wood grain is actually beautiful,” Elena said, looking at the headboard.

“We should test the counter next.”

“The counter is eighteen inches long.”

“I measured. It’s twenty-two.”

“Fine. But I’m keeping my socks on. That tile is freezing.”

Elena pulled her out of bed and kissed her standing up and led her to the kitchen.

They tested the counter.

It held.
