The baby had been screaming for three hours.
Three hours, twenty-seven minutes, and—Ethan glanced at the clock on the mantle—forty-three seconds. Not that he was counting. Not that it mattered. Time had lost all meaning approximately six weeks ago, when his sister had shown up at his door with a car seat, a diaper bag, and the words that had rearranged his entire existence: She’s yours now. There’s no one else.
Ellie arched her back in his arms, her face scrunched and purple with rage, and released another ear-splitting wail that seemed to vibrate through his skull and settle somewhere behind his eyes.
“Okay,” Ethan said, his voice hoarse. “Okay, okay, okay. I hear you. I hear you, sweetheart.”
He didn’t know what she wanted. He’d tried everything. The bottle—rejected with extreme prejudice. The pacifier—spat across the room like a tiny, furious projectile. The bouncing, the rocking, the walking, the white noise machine that was supposed to mimic the sounds of the womb but mostly just made him feel like he was trapped inside a washing machine.
Nothing worked.
He caught a glimpse of himself in the dark window as he paced past it and almost didn’t recognize the man staring back. Thirty-eight years old. Fire captain. Former Marine.
