There was a fingerprint on the glass.
Callum Thorne stood in the center of the Apex Tower lobby at precisely 7:47 a.m., coffee untouched in his hand, and stared at the smudge marring the floor-to-ceiling window. Someone had pressed their palm against the glass. Recently. The oils were still fresh enough to catch the gray Seattle light, a ghostly handprint suspended against the cityscape beyond.
His jaw tightened.
The cleaning crew had finished at 5 a.m. He knew this because he’d written the schedule himself. Which meant someone had touched his window in the two hours and forty-seven minutes since.
He set his coffee on the security desk—on a coaster he kept there for exactly this purpose—and crossed the pristine marble floor. His footsteps echoed in the empty space. Sharp. Precise. Like everything else in his life.
The handprint was at shoulder height. Small. Probably a woman, or a man with delicate hands. Callum pulled a microfiber cloth from his interior jacket pocket—he always carried one—and erased the evidence of human contact with three efficient strokes.
