The mirror arrived on a Tuesday.
Not the bathroom mirrors or the hallway mirror or the antique one Elena had found at a Portobello Road market and insisted belonged in the study because it “complemented the architectural period,” which was Elena-speak for “I want it and I’ve constructed an intellectual justification.” This was the mirror. The one I’d requested during the house hunt. The one Elena had agreed to with a laugh that shook the silver at her temples and a look in her eyes that suggested she’d been thinking about it longer than she’d admit.
Full-length. Floor-to-ceiling, nearly. Beveled edges, heavy glass, the kind of mirror that doesn’t just reflect — it witnesses. The installers mounted it on the bedroom wall opposite the bed and left, and I stood in the doorway of our bedroom — our bedroom, in our house, in Hampstead, with Elena’s coffee machine in the kitchen and my training equipment in the cellar and both our names on the deed — and looked at the glass.
Elena came home at seven. She appeared in the bedroom doorway. Charcoal jacket. White silk shirt. The gold watch. The silver at her temples catching the hallway light.
She looked at the mirror. Then at me. Then at the mirror again.
“Stand in front of it,” she said.
She started with my earrings. Gold ear cuffs — three on the left, one on the right. Removed one at a time, each cuff set on the dresser with a quiet click. The rings. Three from my right hand. Click. Click. Click. The necklace. Her arms around me from behind, her fingers at the clasp, her breath on the nape of my neck.
“Now the clothes,” she said.
Elena unzipped my dress from behind with slow, attentive precision. The dress fell. She unclasped my bra. Her hands replaced the fabric — palms against my breasts, her thumbs tracing slow circles.
“Watch,” she said.
Her right hand slid down my body. Her fingers traced the waistband of my underwear. She slid her hand beneath the fabric. Her fingers found me wet and swollen.
“You’ve been thinking about this all day,” she said.
“Since the installers left.”
Her fingers circled slowly. Deliberately. The specific, consistent rhythm she’d perfected over months of learning my body. I watched in the mirror — naked, flushed, my body rocking against Elena’s hand while she stood behind me fully clothed. The contrast was obscene.
She thrust slowly, deeply, her fingers working the spot that made my vision narrow. “Good,” she said against my ear. “So good. You’re so beautiful like this.”
“Come for me. Watch yourself come.”
I came watching. My eyes locked on the mirror, on Elena’s hand between my legs and my own face breaking open.
“Good girl,” she whispered. “That’s my girl.”
I turned in her arms. “My turn.” I undid her watch. Her shirt. Her bra. Walked her backward to the bed. Straddled her thighs.
“Look at the mirror,” I said.
I slid down her body and lowered my mouth between her thighs and gave her everything I’d learned. She came with her hand in my hair and her eyes on the mirror and my name on her lips like a door opening.
Afterward, tangled on the bed: “The mirror was a good decision.”
“This house is ours. This bed is ours. This mirror is ours. This life — the morning coffee and the terrible traffic and the arguments about throw pillows — is ours.”
“I don’t have a plan for any of it.”
“Good. Plans are overrated.”
“Not for this.”
The mirror reflected us in the lamplight. Two women. Silver and gold. Staying.
