Riley hasn’t been back to the college stadium in over a year. But Liv has the keys — she’s still the head coach, still running the program, still the woman who turned a mediocre team into conference champions.
The stadium is empty. The floodlights are off. The field is dark and dew-covered and exactly the way it looked the night Riley found Liv sitting alone in the stands with an ice pack on her knee and her heart in her hands.
“I brought you something,” Liv says.
She holds up the whistle. The same whistle she wore around her neck for the entire season — the one that meant stop and go and you’re mine on this field. The lanyard is frayed. The metal is dull. It’s the most erotic thing Riley has ever seen.
“Coach,” Riley says, and the word lands between them like a match on gasoline.
“Hart.” Liv’s voice drops to the register that Riley’s body recognizes before her brain does — the low, commanding tone that spent an entire season rewiring her nervous system. “On the field. Now.”
Riley walks onto the pitch. The grass is cold under her bare feet — she kicked off her shoes at the tunnel entrance, an instinct she doesn’t question. Liv follows, whistle in hand, and the distance between them is the width of the center circle and shrinking.
“I’ve been thinking,” Liv says, “about the first time I put my hands on you. Right here. During practice.”
“You adjusted my hips.”
“I put my hands on your hips and my mouth next to your ear and told you where to stand, and your entire body went rigid, and I knew — right then, in front of the whole team — that I was in catastrophic trouble.”
“And now?”
Liv steps close. Close enough that Riley can feel the warmth of her body in the cool night air. She reaches out and places her hands on Riley’s hips — the same grip, the same position, a perfect echo of the moment that started everything.
“Now,” Liv whispers, “I’m going to finish what I started.”
