The Cellar After Hours
A Her Favorite Mistake Bonus Chapter
by Aurora North
This bonus chapter takes place three months after the events of Her Favorite Mistake. It contains explicit sexual content and spoilers for the main novel.
The renovated tasting room smelled like fresh oak and linseed oil and the particular promise of a space that had been rebuilt from its bones.
Three months. That was how long the renovation had taken — new bar top, refinished stone floors, updated lighting that cast warm amber circles on the barrel-stave walls, and a sound system Rosa had insisted on because she was tired of listening to Delilah hum during inventory counts. The cooperative’s first official tasting event was scheduled for Saturday. Tonight was supposed to be a final walkthrough.
Supposed to be.
Mara stood in the center of the room with a glass of the cooperative’s inaugural Pinot Noir and a look on her face that Delilah recognized from the courtroom — precise, calculating, and approximately three seconds from doing something devastating.
She was wearing a white blouse tucked into dark trousers, sleeves rolled to her elbows, the vintage watch glinting at her wrist. Her reading glasses were pushed up on her head. She looked like a woman who had come to inspect a renovation and was instead inspecting a memory.
“You’re staring at the bar,” Delilah said from the doorway.
“I’m remembering the bar.”
“That bar was replaced during the renovation. Different surface. Different wood. Different bar entirely.”
“The surface is different.” Mara took a sip of wine, watching Delilah over the rim with those dark, devastating eyes. “The memory is exactly where I left it.”
Delilah felt the heat start at the base of her spine. The memory Mara was referencing involved this room, that approximate location, and Delilah’s back arched against polished oak while Mara knelt between her legs and took her apart with the focus and dedication of a woman preparing for the bar exam. They’d been half-dressed and desperate and running on adrenaline and a decade of unresolved want, and the tasting room had borne witness to the most intense orgasm of Delilah’s life.
She’d thought about it every time she walked into this room for three months. She suspected Mara knew that.
“We’re supposed to be doing a quality check on the renovation,” Delilah said. Her voice was steady. Her pulse was hammering. “Rosa wants a report before Saturday.”
“I am doing a quality check.” Mara set her wine glass on the new bar with a decisive click. Walked toward Delilah with that deliberate, unhurried stride — the one that said she had already planned every move of what was about to happen and was simply waiting for Delilah to catch up. “The structural integrity seems sound. The lighting is atmospheric. The surface of the new bar appears to be the correct height.”
“The correct height for what?”
Mara stopped in front of her. Close enough that Delilah could feel the warmth radiating from her body, could smell the cedar and clean linen and wine on her breath. She reached past Delilah to the light switch by the door and dimmed the overhead, leaving only the pendant lamps casting their amber pools on the stone.
“Lock the door,” Mara said.
Delilah’s breath caught. She reached behind her without looking and turned the lock. The click echoed in the quiet room.
“Turn around.”
Not a request. A statement. Delivered in the courtroom voice — low, controlled, absolute — stripped of professional context and repurposed for something that made Delilah’s whole body clench with anticipation.
She turned around.
Mara pressed against her from behind. The full length of her body — hips against Delilah’s ass, breasts against her shoulder blades, one arm wrapping around her waist, the other hand sweeping Delilah’s hair to one side to expose the curve of her neck. Her mouth found the spot below Delilah’s left ear — the spot she’d discovered their very first night in Portland, the one she’d been exploiting relentlessly for three months — and kissed it. Slow. Open-mouthed. Her tongue tracing a circle on the sensitive skin while her teeth grazed the edge.
Delilah’s knees went liquid. She braced one hand against the doorframe and Mara’s arm tightened around her waist, holding her up.
“Three months ago,” Mara murmured against her neck, her free hand sliding up Delilah’s stomach under her flannel, palms warm on bare skin, “I had you on a bar in this room. I made you come with my mouth and my fingers and I didn’t let you touch me afterward.” Her hand reached the underside of Delilah’s breast and cupped it through her bra, thumb stroking over the nipple through thin cotton. “I told myself it was strategy. Control. The smart move.” She rolled the nipple between her thumb and forefinger and Delilah gasped and pressed back into her. “It was cowardice. And I owe you for it.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“Let me rephrase.” Mara’s fingers worked the buttons of Delilah’s flannel, one by one, from behind. Each button a deliberate act. Each inch of exposed skin kissed by cool air and then by Mara’s fingertips, trailing behind the fabric. “I want to owe you. I want to take my time tonight. I want to use every surface in this room.” The flannel fell from Delilah’s shoulders. Mara unhooked her bra with one hand and drew it down her arms. “And I want you to be so loud that Rosa hears you from the cottage and knows exactly what happened during our quality check.”
“Rosa’s cottage is two hundred yards away.”
“Then you’d better be very loud.”
Both of Mara’s hands came around from behind and cupped Delilah’s bare breasts. Full, warm, deliberate — palms pressing, fingers spread, thumbs circling both nipples simultaneously in a rhythm that sent sparks cascading down Delilah’s body and pooling between her legs. Delilah’s head fell back against Mara’s shoulder.
“Walk,” Mara said, releasing her breasts and taking her hand. She led Delilah across the room to the new bar — smooth reclaimed oak, honey-colored, gleaming under the pendant light. “Hands on the bar.”
Delilah put her hands on the bar. She was naked from the waist up, the cellar air raising goosebumps on her exposed skin, her nipples tight and aching from Mara’s attention.
“You’re so beautiful like this,” Mara said. “Do you know how many times I’ve thought about having you here again? About walking into this room and bending you over this bar and making you scream?”
“Every day. Since the night I first tasted you in this room, I have thought about doing it again every single day.” Mara’s hands found Delilah’s hips. “These need to come off.”
She unbuttoned Delilah’s jeans. Drew the zipper down slowly. Mara eased the denim over her hips, down her thighs. Delilah stepped out of them and stood in nothing but her underwear — pale blue cotton, simple, already wet enough that she knew Mara could see the dark spot of arousal through the fabric.
Mara pressed her mouth to the base of Delilah’s spine. Kissed upward. Each vertebra receiving individual attention while her fingers traced the edges of her underwear. Not going under. Not yet.
“Mara. Please.”
“Tell me exactly what you want.”
“I want your mouth on me. I want your fingers inside me. I want you to make me come on this bar and then I want to get on my knees and do the same to you.” She looked over her shoulder. “Explicit enough?”
“Explicit enough.” Mara pulled the underwear down. Delilah was completely naked, bent forward over a wine bar, and Mara was still fully dressed behind her.
Mara dropped to her knees. “Wider,” she said, tapping the inside of Delilah’s thigh. Delilah spread her legs. “More.” She spread wider, the position opening her completely.
Then Mara’s tongue touched her from behind and Delilah nearly collapsed.
A long, flat stroke from her clit to her entrance, dragging through every fold, every ridge, every swollen inch of her. Slow enough that Delilah felt every millimeter of contact. Thorough enough that she was moaning before the first stroke was finished.
Mara’s hands gripped Delilah’s hips, holding her steady, holding her open. Her tongue found Delilah’s clit and circled it — slow, precise, methodical and devastating. Delilah’s forehead dropped to the bar. Sounds were coming out of her that she couldn’t organize into language.
“You taste incredible,” Mara said against her, and the vibration of the words against her most sensitive skin made Delilah cry out. “Like the vineyard. Like the wine. Like everything I ever wanted and was too afraid to keep.” She sealed her mouth around Delilah’s clit and sucked, rhythmic, insistent, while sliding two fingers inside her from behind.
Delilah screamed. Mara’s fingers curled inside her, finding the ridged spot on her front wall that made her vision dissolve, and the combination of Mara’s mouth on her clit and Mara’s fingers deep inside her was a sensory overload so complete that Delilah stopped thinking altogether and became nothing but nerve endings and sound.
“Right there — right there — don’t stop — please, Mara, don’t —”
Mara didn’t stop. She fucked Delilah with her fingers and ate her with her mouth and the orgasm built like weather — a pressure system gathering force until Delilah’s entire body was wound so tight she couldn’t breathe and then the pressure broke and she came with a wail that Rosa absolutely heard two hundred yards away.
Mara held her through every pulse. When the trembling slowed, she pressed her mouth to the base of Delilah’s spine. Stood. Wrapped both arms around Delilah from behind. Held her while she came back to earth.
“That was —” Delilah tried to form a sentence. “I think you killed me.”
“You’re talking. You’re not dead.”
“My legs aren’t working. Does that count?”
“It counts as a compliment.”
Delilah turned in Mara’s arms. Kissed her — deep, unhurried, tasting herself on Mara’s tongue.
“Your turn,” Delilah said.
She walked Mara backward to the wide counter on the far wall. Lifted Mara onto it. “When did you get strong enough to do that?” “I move wine barrels for a living. You weigh less than a barrel of Pinot.”
Delilah unbuttoned Mara’s blouse. Kissed her collarbone. Her sternum. The scar on her side. Unhooked the bra. Cupped both breasts and ran her thumbs over the nipples.
“Eyes open,” Delilah said. “You made me watch. Now you watch.”
She kissed down Mara’s stomach. Unbuttoned her trousers and drew them down. Then her underwear — black, simple, drenched. Mara was glistening, swollen, the evidence of her arousal coating her inner thighs.
“You’re so wet,” Delilah breathed, running one finger through the slickness between Mara’s legs. “How long have you been like this?”
“Since I walked into this room and smelled the oak and remembered what you sounded like when you came. Against the old bar. Three months ago. I’ve been wet since then.”
Delilah sank to her knees on the stone floor. Mara’s thighs over her shoulders. “I’m going to take my time. We have all night.”
She put her mouth on her. The first taste of Mara hit her system like a shot of the reserve Pinot — dark, complex, intoxicating. She licked through Mara’s folds slowly, savoring every note.
Delilah ate her with the unhurried attention she brought to blending a vintage. Methodical. Patient. Attentive to every response — the tightening of Mara’s thighs when she circled her clit, the catch of her breath when she dipped her tongue inside, the full-body shudder when she sucked gently and then released.
Delilah slid two fingers inside Mara and curled them upward. Mara’s cry bounced off the stone. She set a rhythm: fingers stroking deep and slow, tongue circling fast and precise, building a counterpoint that left Mara no place to hide from the sensation.
“I love you,” Delilah said against her. “Come for me, Mara. I want to feel you come on my tongue.”
Mara came with a sound that started in her chest and emerged as something between a scream and Delilah’s name — raw, open, unguarded. She clenched around Delilah’s fingers in long, rolling waves.
Delilah held her through it. Kissed the inside of Mara’s thigh and stayed there, breathing, tasting.
“I’m not done with you,” Mara murmured. “I intend to use every surface in this room, and we’ve only christened two.”
She led Delilah to the leather bench. Pulled Delilah onto her lap, straddling her. “Ride my hand,” Mara said, and slid her fingers between Delilah’s legs from underneath.
Delilah sank onto Mara’s fingers with a moan that came from somewhere primal. Two fingers, then three when she gasped “more” against Mara’s mouth. Mara’s fingers curled inside her while Delilah set the pace, rising and falling in Mara’s lap, grinding her clit against Mara’s palm on every downstroke.
They moved together. Forehead to forehead. Eyes open. Delilah reached between them, found Mara’s clit, began circling it with her thumb in time with her own rhythm, and Mara’s composure shattered — her hips bucking up, her free hand gripping Delilah’s hip hard enough to leave marks.
“Together,” Delilah gasped. “Come with me — Mara — please —”
They came together. The orgasm rolled through both of them simultaneously — Delilah clenching around Mara’s fingers, Mara pulsing against Delilah’s thumb, both of them crying out, both of them holding on, the shared climax binding them together as surely as any vow.
They held each other through the aftershocks. Shaking. Sweating. Laughing — because they were still discovering new ways to take each other apart, and the discovery was joyful, and the joy was earned.
Later — much later, after the tasting bench and the barrel rack and a creative interlude against the stone wall that left Mara’s back scraped and Delilah’s voice hoarse — they sat on the tasting room floor with their backs against the new bar and a shared glass of the first vintage between them.
Half-dressed. Sweating. Grinning with the particular satisfaction of two women who had christened a renovated tasting room so thoroughly that it would need to be re-cleaned before Saturday.
“Quality check complete,” Mara said. She had a mark on her neck that was going to be visible for days. She did not appear to care.
“Verdict?”
“The bar is the correct height. The lighting is atmospheric. The acoustics are excellent — I can confirm this based on extensive vocal testing.” She kissed Delilah’s temple. “I recommend regular follow-up inspections.”
“How regular?”
“Weekly. At minimum.” She took a sip of wine. Passed the glass. “The leather bench is a particularly strong feature. Excellent structural support. Very accommodating.”
“I’ll let the designer know.”
“Please don’t.”
Delilah laughed and leaned against Mara’s shoulder and drank wine in a room that smelled like new oak and sex and the particular vintage of a life that had been rebuilt from its bones — patiently, honestly, with the kind of love that survives its own worst chapters and comes out the other side tasting like something worth keeping.
The vineyard hummed around them. Patient. Alive. Theirs.
