He picked up his son’s ex-boyfriend on the side of the road in the rain. Six weeks later, he’d rebuilt them both.
Arthur Vance is a retired architect living alone on a bluff above the San Juan Islands. He builds furniture by hand, drinks his coffee black, and hasn’t touched another person in longer than he’ll admit. He’s been hiding behind blueprints and composure for twenty-four years — closeted, controlled, and certain that the life he built for one is the life he deserves.
Julian Cole is twenty-two, broke, and soaking wet when Arthur’s headlights find him on a dark island road. He’s just been dumped by Arthur’s son Leo via text message, his suitcase is broken, and his entire life fits in the trunk of a stranger’s car. He’s spent his whole life in foster care learning to take up as little space as possible. He’s never had a home. He’s never been someone’s first choice.
Arthur offers Julian a guest room for the night. The night becomes a week. The week becomes something neither of them planned — morning coffee rituals, stolen glances across a workshop, and the slow, devastating discovery that the person standing three feet away is the person you’ve been waiting for your entire life.
But Arthur is Julian’s ex’s father. He’s forty-eight to Julian’s twenty-two. He’s closeted. And his son Leo is coming home for Thanksgiving.
What starts as shelter becomes desire. What starts as desire becomes love. And when Leo arrives and discovers the truth, the foundation Arthur spent six weeks building — with Julian, with himself, with the man he’s been hiding for twenty-four years — faces its first real earthquake.
His Father’s Blueprint is a 98,000-word high-heat MM age-gap romance featuring an architect who builds walls for a living and a young artist who tears them down, forced proximity on a remote island, five explicit scenes that escalate from desperate to devotional, a coming-out at forty-eight, a son who learns to see his father as a person, Post-it notes as a love language, and a guaranteed happily ever after. Standalone.

Chapter One: The Road
The rain started at six.
Not the polite, atmospheric rain of movie scenes — the kind that mists across a windshield while a protagonist stares pensively at a skyline. This was Pacific Northwest rain. Horizontal. Hostile. The kind that turned roads into rivers and visibility into a philosophical concept, the kind that made you understand why the indigenous peoples of this region built their longhouses with the doors facing away from the water.
Julian Cole stood on the shoulder of Roche Harbor Road with a suitcase that had lost its left wheel somewhere between the ferry terminal and the second mile marker, and he thought: This is fine. This is completely fine. I am twenty-two years old, I am standing in a rainstorm on an island I cannot leave until the morning ferry, and I have nowhere to go, and this is fine.
The suitcase was a metaphor, if you wanted to get literary about it. One wheel missing, zipper half-blown, held together with a bungee cord he’d stolen from a gas station in Anacortes. Inside: three shirts, two pairs of jeans, a toothbrush, a journal filled with sketches he’d never shown anyone, and the entire sum of Julian’s worldly possessions, which fit into a twenty-six-inch rolling bag and still left room.
The text from Leo had arrived at 4:47 PM.
I think we should see other people.
No preamble. No buildup. No agonized phone call where both parties pretended to be sad while secretly relieved. Just nine words on a Wednesday afternoon, delivered with the emotional specificity of a weather forecast.
Frequently Asked Questions
How steamy is it?
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 (5/5 flames). Five fully explicit M/M scenes that escalate from a desperate library encounter against the bookshelves to slow worship in a bathtub to a kitchen floor scene that will ruin your ability to cook dinner without blushing. The heat serves the story — every scene advances the relationship and the power dynamic.
What’s the age gap?
Arthur is 48, Julian is 22. The power dynamic is addressed directly and honestly — Arthur is acutely aware of the imbalance and Julian is the one who pushes for more. The relationship is built on mutual respect, not dependency. Julian’s arc is about becoming his own person, not becoming Arthur’s.
What about the son?
Leo discovers the relationship in Act IV. The confrontation is raw and honest. Leo goes to therapy, does the work, and comes back for Christmas. By the end of the book, the three of them are arguing about Costco croissants at a café table and you will be sobbing into your Kindle.
Is there a happy ending?
Always. Full HEA including: Julian accepted to RISD’s summer art program, Arthur out and publicly kissing his partner on a sidewalk in the rain, Leo forming an alliance with Julian against his father’s pastry judgment, a walnut drafting desk with an inscription that will destroy you, and a portrait called The Blueprint that made an art professor cry. No cliffhangers.
