The vault was supposed to be impenetrable.
Elara Vance had studied the blueprints for three months. She knew every laser grid, every pressure plate, every rotation of the security cameras down to the millisecond. The First National Bank of Manhattan had spent forty million dollars on their underground vault system, and she had spent exactly six thousand—mostly on bribes to a disgruntled security consultant—learning how to beat it.
What she hadn’t planned for was the dragon.

Seventy-two hours. That’s how long she had before Marcus Vane’s people came for her sister.
Elara pressed herself flat against the ventilation shaft, controlling her breathing the way she’d taught herself during countless jobs like this one. In through the nose, four counts. Hold for seven. Out through the mouth, eight counts. The rhythm kept her heart rate steady, kept her hands from shaking, kept the panic at bay.
Lily was dying. That was the simple, brutal truth of it.
