She broke into his vault to steal a ruby. She ended up becoming the treasure.

Elara Vance has seventy-two hours to save her sister. The plan was simple: break into the Gilded Trust, steal the legendary Heart of Smaug ruby, and pay off the debts that threaten to destroy her family. She’s a master thief. She can handle guards, lasers, and biometric locks.

She wasn’t expecting the dragon.

Valerius is the last of the Dragon Lords, and he has slept for five hundred years beneath the streets of Manhattan. He wakes to find a thief in his lair—a small, fierce creature who smells like moonlight and destiny.

By ancient law, her life is forfeit. But Valerius doesn’t want to kill her. He wants to keep her.

Trapped in a lair of gold and magic, Elara discovers that the dragon isn’t just a monster—he’s a protector who would burn the world to keep her safe. But when the enemies from her past threaten the only family she has left, Elara must decide: is she a prisoner of the hoard, or the queen of a new kingdom?

Chapter One: The Vault

The vault was supposed to be impenetrable.

Elara Vance had studied the blueprints for three months. She knew every laser grid, every pressure plate, every rotation of the security cameras down to the millisecond. The First National Bank of Manhattan had spent forty million dollars on their underground vault system, and she had spent exactly six thousand—mostly on bribes to a disgruntled security consultant—learning how to beat it.

What she hadn’t planned for was the dragon.

But that came later.

* * *

Seventy-two hours. That’s how long she had before Marcus Vane’s people came for her sister.

Elara pressed herself flat against the ventilation shaft, controlling her breathing the way she’d taught herself during countless jobs like this one. In through the nose, four counts. Hold for seven. Out through the mouth, eight counts. The rhythm kept her heart rate steady, kept her hands from shaking, kept the panic at bay.

Lily was dying. That was the simple, brutal truth of it. Her baby sister—twenty-five years old, sharp as a tack, funnier than anyone had a right to be while hooked up to a dialysis machine—was dying, and the only thing standing between her and a black-market kidney transplant was two million dollars that Elara didn’t have.

Enter Marcus Vane.

Vane was the kind of man who existed in the shadows of legitimate society—a fixer, a broker, a man who could get you anything for the right price. He’d found Elara through her reputation in certain underground circles, and he’d made her an offer she couldn’t refuse: steal one item from one vault, and he’d cover Lily’s transplant. All expenses paid. No questions asked.

The item in question was a ruby the size of her fist, supposedly worth more than some small countries. The Heart of Smaug, the black market called it, though Elara suspected that was more marketing than history. It had been acquired by some reclusive billionaire who kept it in the most secure private vault in the city—a vault that just happened to be accessible through the First National Bank’s underground tunnel system.

She’d done harder jobs. Probably.
