Inside the Box: The Official’s Uniform (Part 2)
Exclusive Bonus Chapter

“My turn,” Maren said.
“You’re still in the penalty box.”
“My two minutes are up.” Maren’s hands found the zipper tab at Iona’s collar. She didn’t pull it. She waited. “May I?”
The asking. The permission. The particular courtesy that Maren had learned not because it came naturally but because she understood that Iona needed it — needed the moment of choice, the confirmation that she was participating rather than being acted upon. Maren asked because asking was a form of care, and care was the language they spoke when the game was over and the positions were stripped away.
“You may,” Iona said.
Maren unzipped the jersey. Slowly. The zipper teeth parting to reveal Iona’s skin — brown, warm, the lace edge of a black bra Iona had chosen deliberately, because she’d known this moment would arrive and had dressed for it the way she dressed for everything: with intention.
“You wore the good bra,” Maren said.
“I wore the only bra that matches the stripes.”
“You matched your bra to your officiating uniform.”
“I matched my bra to the occasion. The uniform was incidental.”
Maren pushed the jersey off Iona’s shoulders. It fell to the floor — stripes pooling on the hardwood like a flag being lowered. Underneath, Iona was trembling. Not visibly — internally, the particular vibration of a woman who had been in control for the last twenty minutes and was now letting the control go, piece by piece, like removing armor.
Maren unhooked the bra. Let it fall. Cupped Iona’s breasts with both hands — gentle at first, thumbs tracing the dark nipples, watching them harden under her touch. Iona’s breathing changed. The composed, regulated rhythm accelerated, and her lips parted, and the composure that she wore like a second skin began to thin.
“Stand up,” Maren said. “Let me take you to bed.”
“You’re giving orders now?”
“I’m making a request. Firmly.”
Iona stood. Maren stood with her — naked, still trembling from her orgasm, but steady enough to take Iona’s hand and lead her to the bedroom. The whistle swung between Iona’s bare breasts as she walked, catching the light, and Maren watched it like a pendulum.
In the bedroom, Maren turned to her. Lifted the whistle lanyard over Iona’s head and set the whistle on the nightstand, carefully, the way you set down something that mattered.
“You don’t need this anymore,” she said.
“I know.”
“But it looks incredible on you.”
“It’s a whistle, Maren.”
“It’s the whistle you used to throw me out of a playoff game while looking like the most beautiful person in the building. It’s the whistle I heard in my nightmares for two weeks and in my fantasies for the rest of the season. I have a complicated relationship with that whistle.”
Iona laughed. The unrationed laugh. The one that transformed her face from composed and untouchable to warm and human and so beautiful that Maren had to kiss her or lose her mind.
She kissed her. Hands on Iona’s waist, mouth on Iona’s mouth, pushing her gently backward until her legs hit the bed. Iona sat. Maren knelt between her thighs and looked up at her — the reverse of the hallway, the inverse of the power dynamic — and Iona looked down at Maren kneeling before her with an expression that was half tenderness and half devastation.
Maren pulled off Iona’s pants. Her underwear — matching the bra, black lace. She pressed her mouth to Iona’s knee scar first. Always first. The ritual. The reverence.
Then she moved higher. Inner thigh. The crease of her hip. The skin that was warm and responsive and that Iona had spent her entire adult life keeping covered, controlled, regulated.
“Lie back,” Maren said.
Iona lay back. Her arms at her sides, her curls spread on the pillow, her chest rising and falling with breaths that were no longer regulated. The composure was gone.
Maren spread Iona’s thighs wider. Settled between them.
“You’re wet,” Maren said against her skin.
“I’ve been wet since I put the jersey on,” Iona said.
“Good.” Maren lowered her mouth. Kissed Iona’s center — one long, slow, flat-tongued stroke that made Iona’s hips lift off the mattress.
“Maren — oh —”
“I’m studying the play. Reviewing the footage. Making sure I have the right angle.”
“If you make one more hockey metaphor while your face is between my legs I will —”
Maren sealed her mouth over Iona’s clit and sucked, and whatever Iona was going to threaten evaporated into a moan that was loud enough to rearrange the furniture.
She worked Iona with the same obsessive focus she brought to everything she cared about. She read Iona’s responses like game data: the particular rhythm that made her thighs clamp, the pressure that made her hands grip the sheets, the angle that made her stop breathing entirely for two-second intervals that meant she was close.
Maren slid her tongue inside her. Tasted her fully, deeply. Then she returned to her clit, circling it with the tip of her tongue while her fingers entered — two, smooth, curling forward with the precision she’d learned from months of practice.
“Right there — Maren — right — don’t change anything — exactly —”
Maren didn’t change anything. She stayed. Consistent, relentless, the defensive wall that didn’t break. Her fingers pumped steadily, curling on each stroke, her tongue maintaining the exact pressure and speed that Iona’s body demanded.
“I’m going to — Maren, I’m —”
“Come for me.” Maren lifted her head just enough to speak, her fingers still moving. “I want to watch you.”
She watched Iona Price come apart on their bed with Maren’s fingers inside her and Maren’s name on her lips and her whole body arching off the mattress. The sound Iona made was not quiet. It was the sound of a woman who had spent seven years being silent during sex and had been given permission to be heard.
She held her fingers still inside Iona as the orgasm pulsed around them. Felt every contraction, every tremor.
When it subsided, Maren crawled up her body and gathered her against her chest.
“That was —” Iona started.
“I wasn’t done.”
“You weren’t done,” Iona repeated.
“The penalty was two minutes. I have time left.”
Maren rolled Iona onto her stomach. Pressed her body along Iona’s back — skin against skin, the full length of her covering Iona. She brushed Iona’s curls aside and kissed the back of her neck.
Iona shivered.
Maren’s hand slid around Iona’s hip, beneath her, and found her again. Still swollen, still wet, still sensitive from the first orgasm — and the touch made Iona gasp and press back against Maren’s body with an involuntary urgency.
“Is this okay?” Maren asked against her ear.
“Yes. God, yes.”
Maren worked her from behind — fingers sliding through the slick heat, finding Iona’s clit and stroking it while her mouth moved on the back of Iona’s neck. She pressed her hips against Iona’s ass, creating a rhythm — her body rocking against Iona’s back while her hand worked between Iona’s legs.
“Maren — I can’t — already —”
“Yes you can.”
“It’s too fast —”
“It’s not too fast. Your body knows what it wants.” She pressed her mouth against Iona’s ear. “Let go. I’m right here.”
Iona came a second time with her face pressed into the pillow and Maren’s body covering hers and Maren’s fingers relentless between her legs. The orgasm was different from the first — shorter, sharper, a lightning strike rather than a wave — and the sound she made into the pillow was muffled and raw and broke something in Maren’s chest that she didn’t want repaired.
They lay tangled together afterward. Maren on her back, Iona sprawled across her chest, both of them sweaty and spent.
The uniform was on the hallway floor. The whistle was on the nightstand. The arm bands were somewhere between the bedroom and the bathroom.
“So,” Maren said, tracing circles on Iona’s stomach. “The uniform thing.”
“The uniform thing.”
“Was that a one-time event, or can I request a rematch?”
“That depends entirely on your behavior.” Iona rolled onto her side. Her eyeliner was destroyed. She was smiling the unrationed smile that Maren collected like currency. “Good behavior earns privileges.”
“I’ve never been good at good behavior.”
“I know. That’s why the penalty structure exists.”
“What if I want to wear the jersey next time?”
Iona’s eyes widened.
“You’re too tall for the jersey,” Iona said. Her voice was not steady.
“I’d roll the sleeves.”
“The stripes would stretch.”
“Good. I want them stretched.” Maren leaned closer. “I want to wear your uniform and make you calls from the bedroom. Penalty for excessive composure. Penalty for being so goddamn beautiful in eyeliner that I can’t concentrate on defense.”
“Those aren’t real penalties.”
“They are in this house.”
Iona kissed her. Long, slow, the kiss of a woman who had been wound to breaking and released and was now settling into the particular warmth that existed only after.
“I love you,” Maren said against her mouth. “In stripes and out of stripes. With the whistle and without the whistle. On the ice and off the ice. And especially, specifically, right now, in this bed, with your uniform on my hallway floor and your eyeliner on my pillow and the taste of you still on my tongue.”
“That last part was new.”
“I’m workshopping the speech.”
“Keep the last part.”
Maren laughed. Pulled Iona against her. Kissed the top of her head.
“Same time next Thursday?” Maren asked.
“I’ll bring the helmet.”
“Oh, fuck.”
“And the skate guards.”
“What are the skate guards for?”
“Good behavior, Vuković.” Iona bit her shoulder — gently, precisely, the calibrated force of a woman who knew exactly how much was enough. “Earn it.”
Maren was, for the first time in her career, highly motivated to behave.
Although she was already planning the penalty.
