The rubber snake was the first sign that Liam’s junior year was going to be different.
He found it coiled on his pillow at The Den—Briarwood’s infamous hockey house—positioned with the kind of careful precision that suggested premeditation. For a split second, Liam’s heart actually stopped. Then his brain caught up with his eyes, and the terror dissolved into something worse.
Irritation.
“What the hell?” He picked up the snake by its tail, dangling it between two fingers like something diseased. It was disturbingly realistic—mottled brown and black, with tiny painted fangs and a forked tongue that looked wet.
“Problem?”
Liam turned to find a stranger leaning against his doorframe. No—not a stranger. The new transfer. Liam had seen his file: Jax Sorensen, forward, arrived mid-summer from some school out west after a “personal situation” that the coaching staff had been frustratingly vague about. Tall, blonde, built like he’d been designed in a lab to make defensemen cry.
Currently grinning like he’d won the lottery.
“You should have seen your face.” Jax’s laugh was bright, unguarded—the kind of laugh that belonged at beach parties, not hockey houses. “I thought you were going to pass out.”
“I wasn’t going to pass out.”
“You went completely white. Like, vampire white. I’m pretty sure I saw your soul leave your body.”
“My soul is fine.” Liam tossed the snake onto his desk, where it landed with a rubbery thwap. “Though yours might be in danger if you pull something like this again.”
