The camera’s off. The mics are hot. And the line between performance and reality just disappeared.

Alex “Lex” Rivera is a top-tier gaming streamer whose brand runs on charm, chaos, and the carefully maintained illusion that he’s straight. When a catastrophic stream meltdown nearly tanks his career, he convinces his longtime moderator Jamie Park to move in as his full-time producer.

What starts as a business arrangement in a too-small apartment becomes something neither of them can control — not the late-night touches, not the desperate first kiss after a breakdown, and definitely not the sex that follows, which is too good and too honest for either of them to pretend it didn’t happen.

They try anyway. Private boyfriends, public “just roommates.” It works until the internet does what the internet does — and suddenly Lex has to choose between the safe, sanitized brand he’s built and the man who makes everything worth doing.

Streaming With Benefits is a high-heat MM contemporary romance with a guaranteed HEA. 83,000 words of forced proximity, secret relationship tension, devastating emotional intimacy, and a love story the internet saw coming before the characters did.

Chapter One: Error 404: Chill Not Found

The chat was moving too fast to read, which was usually a good sign.

Usually.

“Okay, okay, hold on—” Lex leaned into the mic, one hand adjusting his headset, the other death-gripping his mouse. The game had frozen for the third time in twenty minutes. “We’re having some technical difficulties, chat. And by ‘some,’ I mean ‘all of them.’ We are having all of the technical difficulties.”

He grinned at the camera, but it was the version of the grin—the one that said everything’s fine, I’m having fun, stay and watch me be fun. Behind the grin, his pulse was thumping hard enough that he could feel it in his fingertips.

“PARKADE, you seeing this?” he said. “Tell me the overlay’s not doing that thing again.”

The response came through his earpiece—Jamie’s voice, low and even, the way it always was when things were going sideways. “It’s doing the thing. I’m on it. Give me ninety seconds.”

Then the raid hit. Hundreds of bot accounts, filling his screen with slurs faster than any mod team could clear. He kept his face neutral—years of practice—but his hand went still on the mouse and his jaw tightened.

“Already on it.” Jamie’s voice was clipped now. “Banning. Slow mode on. Don’t read chat.”

Then a donation popped up: Anonymous donated $5: “just admit ur gay already lol, we all know”

It wasn’t even hostile. But it landed on top of the slurs and the tech failures and the three-year weight of performing a version of himself that didn’t quite exist, and something in Lex’s chest just—snapped.

“Stream’s over.” He said it flat, no smile, no sign-off. Killed the broadcast and sat in the sudden silence of his apartment.

He sat on the kitchen floor with his back against the cabinet and ate dry Cheerios from the box and tried to make his hands stop shaking.

His phone rang. “You said five minutes,” Jamie said. “It’s been seven. I was being generous.”

The sound of his voice did the thing it always did—took the buzzing panic in Lex’s chest and turned the volume down by half.

“Your career isn’t over.” Jamie’s keyboard was clicking in the background. He was already working. “I’ve pulled the VOD. I’ll edit out the raid.”

Three years of this—three years of Jamie’s voice in his ear, steady and dry and competent, fixing things Lex broke, running the machine so Lex could be the face of it. Three years of needing this voice more than he’d ever needed anything, and never once examining what that meant.

“I’ve been thinking about something,” Lex said.

“That’s usually dangerous.”

“You should move in.”

The silence on Jamie’s end was different now. A different texture entirely.

“You’re serious,” Jamie said.

“Dead serious. I can’t keep doing this alone. Tonight was—” His voice almost cracked. “I need you here, Jamie.”

“I’ll think about it. Give me a day.”

Then, a minute later: PARKADE: The answer is probably yes, by the way. To moving in. I’ll think about it but it’s probably yes.

Something in his chest expanded. He was terrified. He couldn’t stop smiling.

His last coherent thought before sleep dragged him under was: I’m going to hear his laugh through the wall.

And then, quieter, underneath, in the part of himself he never let anywhere near a microphone: I am so fucked.
