The wine cellar smelled like rot and forgotten things.
Vesper Ashford descended the narrow stairs with practiced silence, her bare feet finding each worn stone step without hesitation. Ten years in this house had taught her where every creak hid, every shadow pooled, every servant’s route intersected. She moved through the Governor’s mansion like water through cracks—present everywhere, noticed nowhere.

The torch in her hand cast dancing shadows across walls that grew rougher as she descended. The upper cellars held wine, properly stored and catalogued.
