Chapter One: Adrian

Three weeks before the worst decision of his life, Adrian Vale watched a stranger ruin a perfectly good evening.

The bar was called Vesper, which was pretentious enough to keep out the finance bros and quiet enough to attract the kind of Manhattan clientele who considered a fourteen-dollar old fashioned a reasonable Tuesday expenditure. Adrian had chosen it specifically because no one from his firm drank here, the bartender made his bourbon neat without commentary, and the lighting was dim enough to discourage conversation.

He was two drinks into what he’d planned as a silent, methodical decompression after nine hours of cross-examining a forensic accountant who’d tried to hide six million dollars in a shell corporation registered to a Labradoodle. He’d won, obviously. He always won.

Adrian loosened his tie a quarter inch — his version of celebrating — and raised his glass to no one.
