She built a machine to simulate human touch because she was afraid to ask for the real thing.
Sloane Chen is a brilliant tech founder with a problem: her revolutionary haptic device needs real-world testing, and she needs a human subject. She doesn’t do people. She does data points, algorithms, and carefully controlled environments. Her lab is her sanctuary. Feelings are just bugs in the code.
She doesn’t expect Junie Delgado.
Junie is the yoga instructor in the studio next door—all sunshine smiles, crystal energy, and chaos that makes Sloane’s eye twitch. She reads tarot cards. She believes in astrology. She has seventeen plants named after Greek gods and a cat who judges everyone.
When a broken window throws them together, Junie agrees to be Sloane’s test subject. It’s just science. Clinical trials. Professional distance.
Except the device is designed to simulate intimacy. And every calibration session blurs the lines between data and desire. Sloane’s sensors are reading exactly what Junie feels when she’s touched—and Sloane can’t stop watching. Can’t stop wanting. Can’t stop cataloguing every gasp, every shiver, every response that her algorithms say should be impossible.
But Sloane has a startup to save and parents to prove wrong. Junie has an eviction notice and a past that taught her not to trust anyone who runs from their feelings. And the device Sloane built to avoid human connection might be the only thing that can teach her how to make one.
When the data says they’re incompatible but every touch says otherwise, will Sloane trust her algorithms—or her heart?

Chapter One
The solder wouldn’t take.
Sloane adjusted her magnification goggles, bringing the circuit board into crystalline focus, and tried again. Steady hands. Controlled breathing. The iron tip kissed the copper trace, and for one perfect moment, the silver bead of solder flowed exactly where she wanted it.
Then it beaded up and rolled off like water on wax.
“Contaminated,” she muttered, setting down the iron with more force than necessary. Oxidation on the trace, probably. She’d have to clean it, reapply flux, start over. Again.
The 3D printer in the corner hummed its agreement, extruding layer after patient layer of a prototype housing she’d designed three iterations ago. The sound was almost meditative—a mechanical lullaby that had become the soundtrack of her life. Whirr-click. Whirr-click. The printer didn’t judge. It didn’t ask questions. It just built what she told it to build, one 0.2-millimeter layer at a time.
Sloane pushed back from her workbench and rubbed her eyes beneath the goggles. The blue-white glow of her LED strips made everything look clinical, which was the point. Clean. Controlled. Safe.
She checked the time on her phone: 4:47 PM. Her stomach reminded her that lunch had been a protein bar at 11, eaten standing up while reviewing thermal dissipation calculations. She should eat something real. She should also sleep more than four hours, drink something other than cold brew, and maybe talk to another human being at least once a day.
