IRIS

The champagne was cold, the stars were bright, and Iris couldn’t stop staring at the ring on her finger.

Six months since the double proposal on Storm’s End Island. Six months of building a life together at Hartley Point—Maya’s training program flourishing, Iris’s gallery show getting rave reviews, their little lighthouse cottage becoming the home neither of them had let themselves imagine.

And now, on the anniversary of the night Maya had surprised her with this place, they’d climbed the sixty-seven steps of the lighthouse tower with a blanket, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, and absolutely no intention of stargazing.

“You’re looking at the ring again,” Maya said, her voice warm with amusement.

“I’m allowed. It’s mine.” Iris turned her hand, watching the sea glass catch the moonlight. “Besides, you look at it just as often.”

“I look at you.” Maya’s arms wrapped around her from behind, pulling Iris back against her chest. “The ring is incidental.”

“Liar. I caught you polishing it yesterday.”

“It had paint on it.”

“It always has paint on it. I’m an artist.” Iris tilted her head back against Maya’s shoulder, looking up at the canopy of stars above them. “This is perfect. Tonight is perfect.”

“It’s about to get better.”

Maya’s mouth found her neck—that spot behind her ear that made Iris’s knees go weak every single time. She’d mapped every inch of Iris’s body over the past year, learned every response, and she used that knowledge now with devastating precision.

“We’re on top of a lighthouse,” Iris gasped.

“I know.” Maya’s teeth scraped her earlobe. “Our lighthouse.”

“Someone could see.”

“There’s no one for miles.” Maya’s hand slid under Iris’s sweater, splayed hot against her stomach. “Just the ocean. The stars. And me.”

“Maya—”

“Shh.” Maya turned her, walking her backward until Iris’s shoulders hit the cold glass of the lantern room window. “I’ve been thinking about this all day. About getting you up here. About having you against this glass with the whole Pacific Ocean as our witness.”

Iris’s breath caught. She loved this version of Maya—the one that only came out behind closed doors, when the commander mask fell away and something darker, hungrier, took its place.

“What else have you been thinking about?”

“Taking my time.” Maya’s eyes glinted in the moonlight. “Making you wait. Making you beg.”

“I don’t beg.”

“You will tonight.” It wasn’t a threat. It was a promise. “By the time I’m done with you, you’ll be saying please so prettily I might even give you what you want.”

Heat pooled low in Iris’s belly. “And if I don’t?”

“Then I’ll edge you until you forget your own name.” Maya’s mouth found hers—deep, claiming, leaving no doubt about who was in control. “Either way, you’re going to come so hard you see stars. Real ones this time.”

Iris whimpered against her lips.

MAYA

She stripped Iris slowly.

The sweater first, pulled over Iris’s head and tossed aside. Then the tank top underneath, revealing the lace bra that Maya had bought her for their six-month anniversary—deep purple, almost the color of the evening sky. Maya traced the edge of it with one finger, watching goosebumps rise on Iris’s skin.

“Cold?”

“No.” Iris’s voice came out breathy. “Definitely not cold.”

“Good.” Maya unclasped the bra, let it fall. “Because I plan to warm you up.”

She dropped to her knees.

Iris’s hands flew to Maya’s shoulders, steadying herself as Maya’s mouth traced a path down her stomach. Soft kisses. Sharp bites. The scrape of teeth over her hipbone that made Iris jolt and gasp.

“Patience,” Maya murmured against her skin. “We have all night.”

“I don’t want patience. I want—”

“I know what you want.” Maya looked up at her, and her eyes were dark with intent. “But you don’t get to demand. Not tonight. Tonight, you take what I give you.”

She unbuttoned Iris’s jeans with agonizing slowness. Pulled down the zipper one tooth at a time. Slid the denim down her thighs, revealing the matching purple underwear that was already visibly damp.

“Look at you.” Maya’s voice was rough. “Already so wet for me.”

“You’ve been teasing me all day.”

“I’ve been promising you.” Maya pressed a kiss to the soaked fabric. “There’s a difference.”

She pulled the underwear aside.

Iris’s head fell back against the glass as Maya’s tongue found her—hot and precise, circling her clit with the kind of focused attention that made thought impossible. Maya knew exactly how she liked it, exactly what rhythm made her climb, and she used that knowledge mercilessly.

“Oh god—” Iris’s fingers tangled in Maya’s hair. “Maya, right there—”

Maya pulled back.

“No.” Iris’s voice cracked. “No, don’t stop—”

“What do you say?”

“Maya—”

“Try again.” Maya’s breath was warm against her, close but not touching. “What’s the magic word?”

Iris groaned. “Please. Please, Maya, please don’t stop.”

“Better.” Maya rewarded her with a long, slow lick that made Iris’s knees buckle. “But I think you can do even better than that.”

What followed was the sweetest torture Iris had ever experienced.

Maya brought her to the edge five times. Five times she climbed toward the peak, gasping and shaking and desperate—and five times Maya pulled back at the last second, leaving her trembling and unsatisfied and so aroused she could barely think.

“Please.” Iris was crying now, tears tracking down her cheeks, her whole body a live wire of need. “Maya, please, I can’t—I need—”

“You need what?” Maya’s voice was rough, affected. “Tell me exactly what you need, baby.”

“You. Inside me. I need you inside me, please—”

Maya stood in one fluid motion and spun Iris around, pressing her against the glass. The cold surface against her breasts was a shock, but before Iris could react, Maya’s hand slid between her thighs from behind.

Two fingers sank into her.

Iris cried out—loud and desperate, echoing in the lantern room. Maya’s other hand came up to cover her mouth, not muffling but grounding, her lips against Iris’s ear.

“That’s it. That’s my girl.” Maya’s fingers curled, finding the spot that made Iris see white. “Let me hear you.”

She set a brutal pace. Fast and deep and exactly what Iris needed after an hour of teasing. The heel of Maya’s palm ground against her clit with every thrust, and Iris could feel the orgasm building like a storm—the one she’d been denied five times, cresting now with devastating force.

“Come for me,” Maya commanded. “Come all over my hand. Show me who you belong to.”

Iris shattered.

The orgasm ripped through her with enough force to make her scream, her whole body seizing, clenching around Maya’s fingers as wave after wave of pleasure crashed through her. She would have collapsed if Maya hadn’t been holding her up, keeping her pinned against the glass while she rode out the aftershocks.

It was a full minute before she could speak.

“Holy—” She gasped. “Maya. That was—”

“We’re not done.”

Before Iris could process that, Maya was turning her again, lifting her, carrying her to the blanket they’d spread in the center of the room. She laid Iris down like she was precious, then stripped off her own clothes with efficient movements.

Naked, Maya was devastating. All lean muscle and scarred skin and that look in her eyes that said she was nowhere near finished.

“I want your mouth,” Maya said, lowering herself over Iris. “And then I want to feel you come again while I’m watching.”

Iris pulled her down into a kiss.

IRIS

They made love until the moon set and the stars began to fade.

Three more orgasms for Iris. Two for Maya—one against Iris’s mouth, the other while they rocked together, face to face, foreheads touching, breath mingling, whispering words of love that belonged to no one but them.

When it was over, they lay tangled on the blanket, the first hints of dawn painting the sky in shades of pink and gold.

“I love you,” Maya said, her voice hoarse from everything they’d done. “I love you more than I have words for.”

“I know.” Iris traced the sea glass ring on her finger. “I love you too. Even when you edge me until I cry.”

“Especially then.”

“Sadist.”

“Your sadist.” Maya pulled her closer, pressed a kiss to her hair. “Forever.”

Iris smiled against her chest.

Below them, the lighthouse beam swept over the water, steady and sure. A beacon in the darkness. A promise of safe harbor.

Above them, the stars faded into morning.

And between them, in the space where two hearts beat as one, there was nothing but peace.

They’d found each other in a storm.

They’d chosen each other in the calm that followed.

And they would keep choosing each other, every day, for the rest of their lives.

That was the only promise that mattered.
