The Hunter’s Arrival
The rain had been falling since noon, and Kaelen Ashward was soaked through to the demon in his blood.
He rode with his hood drawn low and his collar turned up against the downpour, though neither did much good. The water found its way past the leather, past the linen, past the thin layer of warmth his body tried to maintain, and settled against his skin like the hands of the dead. His horse—a bad-tempered grey gelding he’d won in a card game in Dunhallow—plodded through the mud with the resigned misery of an animal that had long since stopped expecting better from life.
The road to Castle Voss was a rutted track through countryside that couldn’t decide if it was recovering or dying. On his left, a field stretched toward a line of young apple trees, their branches bare and black against the grey sky. Between them stood the skeletons of older trees—dead since the Withering, too stubborn to fall. A farmer had strung a clothesline between two of the corpse-trunks, and someone’s sodden shirts hung there like surrendering ghosts.
A woman stood in a doorway with a child on her hip. She saw him coming through the rain—saw the potion vials on his belt first, the way everyone did. They caught what little light the overcast sky offered and threw it back in colors that didn’t belong to nature. One was black as a drowned man’s fingernail. Another was the precise red of arterial blood. A third shifted between amber and gold like a living eye, restless in its glass prison.
The woman pulled her child tighter against her chest and stepped backward into the dark of her house. The door closed. He heard the bar drop.
Kaelen’s mouth twitched beneath his hood. Not quite a smile. The thing in his blood—the demon-trace that lived in his veins like silver fire—stirred at the fear. Not much. A flicker of warmth. A faint hum of satisfaction that he’d stopped being ashamed of years ago.
He was what he was. The Scarring had seen to that.
