The Untouchable Summer

The gravel driveway hadn’t changed.

That was my first thought as I pulled through the gates of the Lake Geneva estate, my rental car crunching over the same stones that had announced my arrivals every summer since I was six years old. The same weeping willows lined the path, their branches trailing like fingers in the afternoon breeze. The same white columns framed the main house, rising three stories of old money elegance against the impossibly blue Wisconsin sky.

Everything looked exactly the same.

I was the one who was different.

Four years. That’s how long it had been since I’d set foot on this property—four years of carefully constructed excuses, of Christmas visits cut short, of phone calls that always seemed to drop when the conversation turned to summer plans. My father thought I’d been busy with school. My mother, before she died, had suspected something deeper. She’d always been able to read me like that.

The truth was simpler and more pathetic: I’d been hiding.

I parked behind the main house, next to my father’s silver Mercedes and a sleek black Aston Martin that hadn’t been there before. New money meets old, I thought, grabbing my bag from the passenger seat. The summer air hit me as I stepped out—thick and green and smelling of the lake, of cut grass, of memories I’d spent four years trying to bury.

The back door opened before I reached it.

“Leo.” My father’s voice carried across the flagstone patio, warm with genuine pleasure. Richard Thorne was sixty-two years old, silver-haired and distinguished in that effortless way that old money produced—the kind of man who looked comfortable in both a three-piece suit and the worn khakis he was wearing now. “You made good time.”

“Traffic was light.” I crossed the distance between us and let him pull me into a hug. He smelled like cigars and sandalwood, the same scent that had meant safety when I was young. “The place looks good, Dad.”

“Maria’s been working overtime. She’s convinced you’ve been starving at school.” He pulled back, studying my face with the kind of attention he usually reserved for quarterly reports. “You look thin.”

“I look fine.”

“You look like you haven’t slept in a week.” His hand squeezed my shoulder. “But you’re here now. That’s what matters.”

Here. Yes. That was the problem, wasn’t it?

We walked into the house together, through the kitchen where Maria was already preparing enough food to feed a small army, down the familiar hallway lined with family photographs. I kept my eyes forward, not looking at the frames. Not looking at the pictures from summers past, from birthday parties and Fourth of July celebrations and Christmas mornings.

Not looking for one face in particular.

“Silas arrived this morning,” my father said, casual as a hand grenade. “He’s out on the boat, but he should be back for dinner.”

I didn’t break stride. Didn’t let my expression change. Four years of practice had made me very, very good at this particular performance.

“Great,” I said. “It’ll be good to catch up.”
