They swore the hookups wouldn’t wreck the team. The team disagrees.
Two rival players on the same fall rec-league hockey team swear their post-game hookups won’t interfere with hockey: no feelings, no drama, no kissing in the locker room. But jealousy over shifts, goals, and who gets to take them home first turns their rec league into a full-contact soap opera.
Theo “T” Kline is the cocky, trash-talking forward who plays every game like the Stanley Cup and uses humor to hide the fact that he was told he wasn’t good enough six years ago and never recovered. Jasper “Jazz” Okafor is the calm, devastating defenseman who rebuilt his hockey life after a teammate outed him and treats his composure like a fortress.
Their chemistry on ice is lethal. In bed, it’s an arms race between control and surrender. But when the arrangement starts cracking — jealousy spilling onto the ice, teammates noticing, their coach issuing an ultimatum — they’ll have to decide whether they care more about the championship or about the fact that they’ve already fallen into something way more dangerous than casual sex.
When their found-family teammates stage an intervention, the pair have to choose: sort the mess out, or stop sleeping together before playoffs. The answer requires the one thing neither of them knows how to do — be honest.

The Forge smells like rubber, Zamboni exhaust, and the ghost of every beer ever spilled. Theo arrives late. Jasper arrives on time. Neither of them is ready for what happens next.
Chapter One: First Whistle
The Forge smelled exactly the way I remembered — rubber, Zamboni exhaust, and the faint ghost of every beer that had ever been spilled on the concrete steps leading down to the rink. It was the kind of smell that shouldn’t have made me feel anything, but my chest did this stupid expanding thing every time I walked through the doors, like my lungs had been waiting all summer to breathe recycled arena air.
I was twelve minutes late because I’d been on a call with a client in Rochester who wanted to renegotiate pricing on a server rack he’d already signed for, and I’d had to talk him off the ledge using nothing but charm and a willingness to lie about delivery timelines. That was the job. Sell the thing, close the thing, drive to the next thing. Repeat until death or until hockey season started, whichever came first.
Hockey season had come first.
I shoved through the locker room door with my bag half-unzipped and one shin guard already strapped over my jeans because I’d started getting dressed in the parking lot like a lunatic. The room was already full — guys in various stages of gear, the familiar clatter of sticks and tape and someone’s shitty speaker playing music that no one had agreed on.
“Kline. You’re late.” Max didn’t even look up from lacing his pads. He was already in full goalie gear from the waist down, his chest bare, a roll of white tape between his teeth like a cigar. “Rina’s going to make you skate lines.”
“Rina loves me.”
“Rina tolerates you. There’s a difference, and you should learn it.” Max finally looked up, grinning, and I remembered why I’d missed this weird, chaotic person all summer.
