Penelope Douglas Books in Order: Devil’s Night, Fall Away, Hellbent & Standalones (2026)

Penelope Douglas books in order covers three connected series, a shelf of standalones and more than a decade of dark romance, and 2026 has been a big year for it: Quiet Ones, the third Hellbent book, came out in February, and in May Crave announced a series adaptation of Five Brothers. Below is every Penelope Douglas novel in reading order with a spoiler-free hook, the Devil’s Night series in order (the question everyone actually searches), how Fall Away and Hellbent connect, where to start and the darker Fractal Enigma picks for when you’ve read them all.

Penelope Douglas Books in Order: Where to Start

Start with Corrupt if you want the Douglas everyone talks about on BookTok: masks, a town with its own rules, four men who answer to no one and a heroine who refuses to stay scared. Start with Birthday Girl if you want her at her most controlled, a forbidden age-gap standalone with no series to commit to. Start with Bully if you want to read everything in order, since it opens Fall Away and the whole Shelburne Falls world that Hellbent continues.

A note before you start: Douglas writes dark. Bullying, revenge, power imbalance, stalking, violence and dubious consent all appear across the catalog, more in Devil’s Night than anywhere else. Check the content notes for each book; nothing below is a spoiler.

The Devil’s Night Series in Order

Devil’s Night follows the Horsemen of Thunder Bay, Michael, Kai, Damon and Will, and the women who refuse to be their victims. Each main book centers a new couple, but the plot runs continuously, so this is the one Douglas series you should read in strict order. Heat is 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️: explicit, frequent and deliberately dark.

  1. Corrupt (2015): Erika Fane has spent years watching Michael Crist, her boyfriend’s older brother, and the crimes he and his friends hide. Now he’s noticed her back. The book that launched the series and the masked Devil’s Night aesthetic.
  2. Hideaway (2017): Banks knows the legend of a hidden twelfth floor in an abandoned hotel. Kai Mori, newly out of prison, wants what she knows.
  3. Kill Switch (2019): Winter Ashby sent Damon to prison. He’s out, and his revenge is aimed at her and everyone she loves. The darkest entry, with the content notes to match.
  4. Conclave (2019): a short novella, numbered 3.5, that bridges Kill Switch and Nightfall. Read it between them.
  5. Nightfall (2020): Will Grayson’s book, set at Blackchurch, a remote mansion where wealthy families send their troubled sons, with Emory at the center of his story.
  6. Fire Night (December 5, 2020): a holiday novella, numbered 4.5, of about 28,000 words. The whole crew and their families gather for a candlelit winter solstice celebration, until masked strangers arrive. Read it last; it assumes you know every couple.

The Fall Away Series in Order

Douglas’s first series, set in Shelburne Falls, a small town with a high school rivalry that never ends. New adult bully romance, 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ explicit but lighter in tone than Devil’s Night.

  1. Bully (2013): Tate and Jared were best friends until he turned on her without explanation. After a year abroad, she comes home to senior year and decides she’s done taking it. The book that started it all.
  2. Until You (2013): Bully retold from Jared’s side, and the answer to why he did it.
  3. Rival (2014): Madoc and Fallon, two teenagers who were forced together years ago and torn apart, back under the same roof.
  4. Falling Away (2015): Jax, Jared’s brother, and Juliet, a girl he’s never been able to read.
  5. Aflame (2015): Tate and Jared again, older, apart and testing whether the relationship survives adulthood.
  6. Next to Never (2017): a Fall Away novella, numbered 4.5, for readers who want more time in Shelburne Falls.

Goodreads also lists two short companion releases, Adrenaline (2016) and The Next Flame (2017), with the series. Both are optional extras rather than new couples.

The Hellbent Series in Order

Hellbent is the next generation of Fall Away: the kids of Jared, Tate and their friends grow up in Shelburne Falls, facing off against the rival town of Weston. It can be read without Fall Away, but the parents’ history is half the fun. The series is planned to cover the love stories of Hawke, Dylan, Hunter, Quinn, Kade, A.J. and James.

  1. Falls Boys (October 18, 2022): Aro is rough, unapologetic and trying to collect money she’s owed. Hawken “Hawke” Trent is the polite, clean-cut college student who gets in her way. When the police show up, they hide in Quinn’s bake shop and slip through a hidden door into a speakeasy that locks behind them.
  2. Pirate Girls (2024): Jared Trent’s daughter grew up with the Caruthers twins, Kade and Hunter. Hunter has defected to rival Weston, Kade wants revenge, and during Rivalry Week a prisoner exchange sends her across enemy lines into Hunter’s custody for two weeks.
  3. Quiet Ones (February 24, 2026): Quinn is twenty-one, tired of being watched by her father, her brothers and the Trent and Caruthers families, and has been waiting for Lucas Morrow since she was thirteen. Lucas, twelve years older, left town carrying a guilt she doesn’t know about. Now he’s back for a short visit and she’s grown up. The newest Douglas book.

Three more Hellbent titles, Night Thieves, Parade Alley and Fire Falls, are listed with no release dates yet.

Penelope Douglas Standalones

Every standalone is a complete story. These are where Douglas pushes hardest on taboo, and they’re the easiest entry point if you don’t want a series.

  • Misconduct (2015): her first adult standalone, a forbidden romance with a teacher at the center.
  • Punk 57 (2016): Ryen and Misha have been anonymous pen pals since childhood. When Misha finds out who Ryen is in real life, he doesn’t like what he sees, and he doesn’t tell her who he is. Our list of books like Punk 57 has the readalikes.
  • Birthday Girl (2018): Jordan Hadley is nineteen and has nowhere to live. Pike Lawrence is thirty-eight and her boyfriend’s father, and he takes her in for the summer. Our books like Birthday Girl guide picks up from here.
  • Credence (2020): after her parents die, Tiernan de Haas is sent to a remote Colorado mountain to live with her uncle Jake and his sons, Noah and Kaleb, for one long winter. Her most taboo book. See our books like Credence list.
  • Tryst Six Venom (2021): a dark standalone; read the content notes before you start.
  • Five Brothers (2024): the five Jaeger brothers and the woman who uncovers their secrets. Now in development as a TV series at Crave.

What’s Next: The Five Brothers Series and More Hellbent

The big 2026 news is on screen. In May, Bell Media’s Canadian streamer Crave, the home of Heated Rivalry, announced it had optioned Five Brothers and is developing it as a multi-season series. No cast, director or premiere date has been announced. There is no announced adaptation of Devil’s Night as of October 2026, despite years of fan casting.

On the page, Hellbent continues: Night Thieves, Parade Alley and Fire Falls are all listed as upcoming, without dates. If Quiet Ones is your first Douglas, go back to Falls Boys and then Bully; the families in Hellbent make more sense once you’ve met them as teenagers.
