“We only do this when we win.”
That was the rule. One rule among four that Nate Carter set the night he and his new tight end fell into bed after a blowout victory. No feelings. No kissing. No staying the night. And definitely no one finds out.
Mason Reid agreed to every single one.
He also knew they wouldn’t last.
Because every win hits harder. Every loss aches worse. Every rule Nate swore he wouldn’t break shatters the second Mason looks at him like that.
Now their secret has a season clock, the team is watching, and Nate has to decide: keep running the play that’s working, or call an audible on everything he thought he wanted.

Chapter One: Kickoff
The tunnel smells like sweat and turf and seventy thousand people losing their minds, and I swear to God there’s no drug on earth that comes close.
I roll my neck, bounce on my toes, and stare down sixty yards of fresh-cut grass lit up brighter than daylight. The stadium is shaking. Not metaphorically — the concrete under my cleats is vibrating from the noise, bass drums and stomping feet and a wall of sound that hits you in the chest like a second heartbeat.
Week One. Home opener. The Austin Aces versus the Denver Stallions, and every seat in this building is full of people who’ve been waiting since February to watch me throw a football.
I fucking love my job.
“Carter! You ready to run through a wall or what?” Dex Holloway slaps my shoulder pads hard enough to rattle my teeth. He’s grinning like a maniac, gold chain tucked under his jersey, eye black smeared crooked because he thinks it makes him look intimidating. It makes him look like a raccoon, but I’ve never told him that.
“Born ready,” I tell him. The truth is more complicated. I’m not ready. I’m hungry. There’s a difference.
Win.
Mason Reid. He’s standing near the Gatorade table, helmet off, rolling his neck slow and easy like a man who’s in no rush to prove anything. He’s massive — six-four, two-forty, built like someone stacked muscle on top of muscle and then added more muscle for fun.
“I’ll find you,” I tell him. “Second half. Be ready.” He nods once. No smile. No fist bump. Just a nod, like a contract signed in silence.
The second half is mine. I come out possessed — and then I see it: Mason, running a seam route straight up the middle. I let it rip. The ball leaves my hand on a rope. Mason adjusts mid-stride, reaches up with one hand and plucks it out of the sky. The stadium detonates.
I’m sprinting downfield before I know I’m moving. I grab his facemask — gently, but firmly — and pull his helmet against mine. “That’s what I’m talking about!” Mason’s eyes find mine through the facemasks. Dark. Steady. The faintest curve at the corner of his mouth. “Told you the seam was there,” he says.
We win. And standing at my window at midnight, bourbon in hand, I think about the way he looked at me across the locker room. The nod. The absolute steadiness of his eyes. I stare at the ceiling for forty-five minutes before I fall asleep.

Tuesday Night — A scene TOO HOT for Amazon
Nate shows up at Mason’s apartment with groceries and zero cooking skills. What starts as a risotto lesson turns into the hottest, most domestic night of their lives — counter sex, flour handprints, and the kind of slow, devastating intimacy that happens when two people finally stop pretending.
