Chapter One: Fresh Meat
Roman Voss hit the gym at six a.m. because six a.m. belonged to him.
No one else wanted it. The other fighters rolled in at eight, nine, dragging their asses through the door with protein shakes and earbuds and whatever excuse they’d invented for being late. Roman didn’t need excuses. He needed the silence, the empty mat, the two hours of precise, uninterrupted work before the rest of the world showed up to ruin it.
Iron Lock Training Center wasn’t pretty. Concrete floors stained with years of chalk and sweat. Industrial lights that buzzed at a frequency most people found annoying and Roman found comforting. A wall of mirrors that hadn’t been properly cleaned since the gym opened in 2011. Heavy bags along the south wall, speed bags in the corner, and the main mat—forty feet by forty feet of blue competition surface that Roman had bled on more times than he could count.
He loved this place the way other men loved churches. Quietly, completely, without needing to explain it to anyone.
He was going to be a problem. Roman had known it the moment Torres said the word chaos.
He just hadn’t known what kind.
