Chapter One
The intake form said her goal was to “stop cracking like a glow stick every time I stand up.”
Tessa read it twice at the front desk, mouth twitching. Most new clients wrote things like core strength or flexibility or the always-vague toning. This one — Lena Brooks, age twenty-nine, no prior injuries listed, emergency contact named Maya — had written a joke. And it was a good joke.
Tessa set the form down and glanced toward the studio door. Ten minutes to class. Five clients already warming up on their machines, going through the gentle rocking and breathing she’d taught them to do before she took over. Her studio. Her room. The one place on earth where Tessa Vale felt like everything was exactly where it should be.
The front door chimed. She looked up, and there was Lena Brooks.
Not what Tessa expected. Lena was medium height, soft in the shoulders and hips, with dark skin and natural hair pulled into a pineapple that was already starting to escape its elastic. She wore an oversized NYU T-shirt and black leggings that had seen better days, and she was carrying a water bottle with a sticker on it that said Hydrate or Die-drate.
“Lena?” Tessa said, stepping out from behind the desk.
“That’s me.” Lena’s smile arrived fast, wide, slightly crooked. “I’m early. Sorry. I didn’t know if I should be early. The website said ‘arrive ten minutes before your first class,’ so I arrived fifteen because I’m an overachiever in exactly one area of life and it’s punctuality.”
“You’re perfect,” Tessa said, and then heard it. Adjusted. “Perfectly on time. Let me show you your machine.”
