Chapter One: The Dependable Man
The flower arrangement in the lobby was dying.
Not dramatically—not wilting petals and brown edges, nothing the average guest would clock. But the stargazer lilies had been cut too long, the water was cloudy, and whoever had arranged them had placed the tallest stems at the front instead of the back, which blocked the sightline to the concierge desk. It was lazy work. The Halcyon Grand charged six hundred a night for their standard rooms. Lazy work was an insult at that price point.
I moved the tallest stems to the back, adjusted the greenery, and made a mental note to mention it to the front-of-house manager. Then I caught myself and stopped.
Not my hotel. Not my staff. Not my problem.
