The fake relationship was strategy. The real one was a crisis neither of them could manage.
Theo Vance is a 2.4-million-follower thirst-trap influencer whose career just imploded. One decontextualized viral video, and overnight he went from beloved content creator to internet villain. Two brand deals are paused, his ex is giving interviews, and the comment section has turned into a war zone.
Dominic Kessler is the crisis PR consultant hired to save him. Cold, precise, and impossible to charm, Dom arrives with a binder, a content calendar, and a plan: total image rehabilitation. No unscripted posts. No hookups. No drama. And one very specific strategy — a fake relationship to rebrand Theo as settled, mature, and off the market.
When a paparazzi misunderstanding makes the internet believe they are the couple, the smartest PR move is to lean into it. Now they’re fake-dating for the cameras while navigating real attraction behind closed doors — and the closer they get to selling the lie, the harder it becomes to admit it stopped being one.
Theo performs confidence for a living but has never felt seen without a filter. Dom built his entire life to be unshakeable and is discovering that one chaotic, funny, dangerously honest man can take a sledgehammer to every wall. The public wants the love story. The brands want the engagement. And two men who’ve spent their lives managing their own images are about to find out what happens when the cameras catch something real.

Chapter One: The Fall
The first thing I became aware of was the taste in my mouth — champagne and regret, in roughly equal proportions.
The second thing was that I was not in my apartment. I was on Luna’s couch, which I recognized by the aggressive amount of throw pillows and the fact that my left foot was wedged between two cushions at an angle that suggested I’d been dropped here from a moderate height. I was still wearing last night’s suit. The jacket was gone — somewhere — but the shirt was buttoned wrong and there was a smear of something on my collar that might have been lipstick or might have been the artisanal beet hummus from the canapé table.
The third thing, and this was the one that made my stomach drop straight through the couch and into whatever circle of hell waited beneath Luna’s Pottery Barn sectional, was that my phone was dead.
A dead phone, under normal circumstances, meant nothing. Inconvenience. Mild irritation. The minor discomfort of existing without a screen for twenty minutes while I located a charger.
A dead phone the morning after I’d publicly screamed at a brand exec at an Atlas Fitness launch party, in front of three hundred people and apparently six active cameras, meant that whatever had happened in the hours since I’d blacked out was happening without me and I couldn’t see the damage.
I lay there for another ten seconds, staring at Luna’s ceiling, doing that thing where you try to convince your brain that maybe it was fine. Maybe nobody noticed. Maybe the internet had moved on to something else — a celebrity divorce, a political scandal, a video of a dog doing something improbable. Maybe I was overreacting and the knot in my chest was just the hangover.
Then Luna walked into the living room holding two phones — hers and my backup — and wearing an expression I’d only seen once before, when her identity got stolen and someone opened a Nordstrom card in her name.
“Hey,” she said carefully. “How are you feeling?”
“Like a person who’s about to hear bad news.”
She sat on the coffee table across from me, knees almost touching mine, and held up her phone. “On a scale of one to ten, how honest do you want me to be right now?”
“Luna.”
“Okay.” She turned the screen toward me. “So.”
There are certain things you can’t prepare for, no matter how many years you spend building a life in front of cameras. Getting recognized at the grocery store — you get used to it. Reading a comment section that dissects your body like a med school cadaver — you develop a callus. Watching yourself become a trending topic for the wrong reasons — that one never gets easier. That one always feels like stepping off a ledge you didn’t see.
The video was forty-three seconds long. Forty-three seconds of me, lit by the golden ambient glow of the Atlas Fitness VIP lounge, face twisted, voice raised, pointing my finger at a man in a twelve-thousand-dollar suit while he stood there looking calm and vaguely amused, like he was watching a toddler throw a tantrum.
The edit — and it was an edit, somebody had cut this down from a longer interaction with the precision of a person who knew exactly what story they wanted to tell — started mid-sentence. My sentence. So what you saw, what the 2.7 million people who’d already watched it saw, was Theo Vance losing his goddamn mind at Richard Calloway, VP of Brand Partnerships at Atlas Fitness, for no apparent reason.
What you didn’t see, because the camera hadn’t been rolling yet, was Calloway leaning into my ear at the bar, smelling like bourbon and Bleu de Chanel, and saying with a smile that never wavered: “You know, Theo, you’ve really built something impressive here. For someone like you. I mean, the gay thing — it’s a niche, but you’ve made it work. It’s almost like a real career.”
Almost like a real career. Said in that tone. That smooth, boardroom, I’m-not-homophobic-I-have-gay-friends tone that wraps the knife in velvet so you feel crazy for bleeding.
