The fake boyfriend. The real feelings. The hat trick that changed everything.

Leo “Lightning” Kostas is the NHL’s most charismatic winger — and its most reckless. After a viral bar incident threatens his sponsorships and his career, the franchise demands an image rehab: a wholesome, photogenic, brand-safe queer relationship that will make the internet fall in love with him again.

Jonah Park is the team’s head of analytics — brilliant, private, and allergic to attention. He builds models that win games, and he does it from behind a screen where nobody can see him. Being seen is not on his agenda. Being fake-dated by a walking PR disaster is definitely not on his agenda.

The contract is simple: six months, public appearances, coordinated Instagram posts, and absolutely no real feelings. The contract does not account for late-night film sessions that turn into confessions. For hotel rooms where practice kisses stop being practice. For the moment a man who performs everything stops performing — and the man who controls everything loses control.

When a journalist’s investigation threatens to expose the arrangement and destroy Jonah’s career, they’ll have to decide: protect the lie that’s keeping them safe, or fight for the truth that’s tearing them apart.

Chapter One: Highlight Reel Disaster

The third puck hit the net at 14:37 of the second period, and twenty thousand people lost their collective minds.

I stood at center ice while hats rained down from every level of the arena, a blizzard of snapbacks and beanies tumbling onto the frozen surface like the world’s most chaotic ticker tape parade. A kid in the third row launched a foam finger that sailed end over end and smacked a ref in the shoulder. Somewhere in the upper deck, a shirtless man was being restrained by two friends who clearly knew this was a losing battle. It was February in Chicago. Minus nine outside. The man had body paint.

Hat trick. My second of the season. The PA system blasted something with too much bass while the Jumbotron replayed the goal from four angles—wrist shot, top corner, the goalie’s glove a full six inches too low. I watched myself score in slow motion and thought, God, I’m pretty.

That’s not arrogance. That’s market research. The Leo Kostas brand runs on confidence, charisma, and a highlight reel that makes SportsCenter producers weep with gratitude. I give them the grin. The celly. The wink at the camera that ends up screen-capped and turned into reaction GIFs within the hour. The league’s first openly bisexual star, four years running, and I wear it like another sponsorship deal—bright, visible, profitable.

The persona fits like a glove. Which is convenient, because gloves are the first thing you learn to hide behind when your hands won’t stop shaking.

Nate Ellis, our captain and the closest thing I have to a conscience, skated up and tapped my helmet. “Don’t let it go to your head.”

“Too late. It’s been there since the first one.”

We won 5–2. I had three goals and an assist and the kind of post-game buzz that makes bad decisions feel like destiny.

The bar was called Onyx, which should’ve been my first warning. Nothing good happens in a place that names itself after a gemstone and charges twenty-six dollars for a whiskey neat…
