The only thing more dangerous than the track is falling for the man in his ear.
Adrian Vale is the most talented F1 driver on the grid and the hardest man alive to keep in one piece. Elias Sato is his new race engineer—the voice in his ear telling him when to push, when to brake, and when to shut up and trust the data. Adrian doesn’t trust anyone. Elias doesn’t lose his composure for anyone.
They’re going to destroy each other’s rules.
After a catastrophic race costs the team a win, management forces them into a trust-building arrangement that puts them in each other’s space for the rest of the season. Shared debriefs. Coordinated media. Constant proximity across twelve countries. What starts as professional friction catches fire somewhere between a rain-soaked track in Spa and a hotel room in Singapore, and suddenly the only thing more dangerous than their attraction is what happens to the championship—and their careers—if anyone finds out.

Chapter One: Box, Box, Box
Ten laps. That was all Adrian Vale needed.
The Bahrain International Circuit stretched ahead of him in a shimmering ribbon of floodlit asphalt, the desert air dense enough to taste through his helmet vents. His tires were three laps fresher than Leclerc’s. The gap was 1.4 seconds and closing. The steering wheel pulsed against his gloves with data he didn’t need to read because his body already knew the answer: the car was alive tonight, and so was he.
“Adrian, box this lap. Repeat, box this lap. The rears are showing significant degradation.”
Elias Sato’s voice came through the radio like it always did—measured, unhurried, as if he were reading a wine list instead of calling life-or-death strategy at two hundred miles an hour. The man had been Adrian’s race engineer for exactly four races, counting pre-season testing, and already that voice had lodged itself somewhere behind Adrian’s sternum like a splinter he couldn’t get at.
Adrian thumbed the radio. “Negative. Tires are fine. I’ve got pace.”
A beat of silence. In Formula 1, a beat of silence from your engineer was the vocal equivalent of a middle finger.
“The data disagrees. Rear-left surface temp is climbing. You’ll lose the cliff in six laps, maybe five.”
“Then I’ll catch him in four.”
Another silence. Longer this time. Adrian could picture Elias on the pit wall—headset on, screens reflected in his glasses, that particular stillness he held when he was furious but too disciplined to let it bleed into the radio.
Adrian was about to do something very stupid.
“Copy,” Elias said. Flat. Final. The radio equivalent of I told you so, in advance.
Lap 47. Gap: 0.6.
Lap 48. Gap: 0.4. He could see Leclerc’s gearbox now, the red of the Ferrari catching the floodlights, and the hunger was a living thing inside his chest.
Lap 49. The left rear let go.
Not catastrophically. Not the kind of failure that put you into a wall and made your mother call from Lisbon at three in the morning with her voice held together by prayer. Just a slow, sickening loss of grip that turned a championship-caliber car into a shopping cart.
