She entered the countess’s bed with a contract — and a blade.
For three centuries, Countess Vespera Saint-Clair has ruled the northern vampire province of Belladonne from a black-stone estate overlooking the sea. Humans call her a monster. The vampire council calls her dangerously sympathetic. The courtesans under her protection call her the only noble who treats their contracts as something other than ownership.
Iris Morcant enters Vespera’s estate under an exclusive blood-companionship contract. She is beautiful, poised, and renowned for making even ancient vampires lose control. She is also carrying a silver blade hidden beneath her corset.
The human resistance believes Vespera is responsible for the disappearances of contracted blood courtesans throughout the province. Iris has agreed to seduce the countess, gain access to her private chambers, and kill her before the next full moon.
But Vespera refuses to feed without Iris’s explicit permission. She memorises Iris’s boundaries. She punishes nobles who touch contracted humans without consent. And their nightly feeding rituals become increasingly intimate — until Iris discovers that the terrifying countess is almost painfully starved for freely offered touch.
When Vespera uncovers the assassination plot, she does not execute Iris. She gives her the blade back. Now Iris must decide whether to complete the mission she was raised to believe in or join the immortal woman she was sent to destroy.

Chapter One: The Woman in Green
The carriage wheels hit a rut in the coastal road and I caught myself against the window frame, fingers white on rain-slicked wood. Through the glass, Saint-Clair Manor rose from the cliffside like a wound in the landscape — black stone, sharp towers, arched windows lit amber against the bruised winter sky. Below it, the sea threw itself against the rocks with the kind of blind, furious persistence I recognized in myself.
I adjusted my glasses and catalogued what I could see. Two guard towers flanking the main gate, both occupied. A stable wing to the east with lantern light moving behind shuttered doors. Three visible exits from the courtyard — the main gate behind me, a servants’ passage beneath the east tower, and what appeared to be a garden arch disappearing into fog to the north. I committed the layout to memory the way other women memorized recipes or hymn lyrics. Exits first. Weapons second. Smiles third.
The blade was a narrow line of pressure against my left ribs, sewn into the boning channel of my corset between the third and fourth steel. Silver, eight inches, hollow-ground by a smith who’d lost two daughters to fraudulent blood contracts. It sat against my skin like a second heartbeat — cold where my pulse was warm, still where my chest rose and fell.
Thirty days. That was the length of the exclusive contract I’d signed in Gideon’s study three weeks ago, with the ink still wet on my professional credentials and my sister’s name carved into the silence of every sentence he didn’t finish. Thirty days to gain the Countess Vespera Saint-Clair’s trust, access her private chambers, and drive that blade through the space between her third and fourth rib, angled left.
Simple enough. I’d served vampires who were crueler, hungrier, less restrained. I’d knelt for patrons whose hunger felt like standing too close to an open furnace, whose hands left marks that took days to fade, whose idea of a compliment was telling me I bled sweetly.
The Countess of Belladonne was supposed to be worse than all of them.
The carriage shuddered to a halt in the courtyard, and a footman opened the door before I could reach the handle. The rain hit me sideways — ice-cold, salt-heavy, tasting of the sea below. I gathered my cloak, arranged my expression into the one I’d perfected over six years of professional companionship — warm but contained, approachable but not desperate, the kind of face that made powerful creatures feel admired without ever feeling challenged — and stepped down onto wet cobblestones.

Six months after the Synod falls, Iris takes Vespera back to the chamber where they first shared blood. No war. No urgency. Just the bond wide open and nothing between them but candlelight. Bond-enhanced sensation, the strap-on, and the filthiest, most emotional anniversary scene in the series.
