Chapter One
The list lived in my head like a second heartbeat.
Cake tasting confirmation — done. Florist walkthrough — scheduled for Tuesday. Seating chart conflicts between Aunt Helen and Uncle Pete, who hadn’t spoken since the incident at Dad’s retirement party involving a crab leg and a surprisingly pointed remark about real estate investments — flagged, solution pending. Rehearsal dinner menu locked.
I had a spreadsheet. Color-coded. Three tabs.
The highway stretched ahead of me, the Maine coast opening up through gaps in the pines, and I should have been enjoying the drive. My little brother was getting married in five days, and I was arriving early to make sure nothing burned down before the ceremony.
The Ashford family had a load-bearing wall, and it was me.
My impression of Dominic Reyes could be summarized in three words: a lot.
A lot of laugh. A lot of cologne. A lot of eye contact that felt like he was running a diagnostic on your soul while telling you a joke about tequila.
Then I heard the laugh. It cut through the lobby noise like a blade through cotton. Dominic Reyes was leaning against a pillar near the lounge entrance, surrounded by three of Mia’s bridesmaids. His forearms were a problem.
“Elliot Ashford. Still look like you’re about to audit someone.” His grip was warm, firm, and held a beat longer than a handshake needed to. “Relax. It’s a wedding, not a board meeting.”
“Dominic. Still look like you’re running for prom king.”
“Your brother’s lucky, you know. Having someone like you in his corner. Not everyone gets that.”
Then he walked away, barefoot and unhurried, and I sat with my whiskey and the strange, unsettled feeling that Dominic Reyes had looked at me and seen something I’d spent years making sure no one noticed.
The suite was exactly as I’d left it — except for the suitcase. Ryan: Forgot to mention — you and Dom are sharing the suite. Hotel’s full. You’ll survive. Love you!!
