Heated Rivalry Spicy Chapters: Every Scene, Chapter by Chapter (2026)

Heated Rivalry spicy chapters are most of the book, and that’s the first thing new readers coming from the show need to know. Rachel Reid’s second Game Changers novel opens with Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov already sleeping together, then jumps back to 2008 and tells their secret eight-year arrangement one hotel room at a time. Our verdict on the five-chili scale: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ explicit, at the top end of the scale for traditionally published MM romance. About a dozen on-page encounters, a first kiss that takes until Chapter 8 to arrive and a final act at a lake cottage that turns the heat into a love story. It’s for readers who want the sex to do the storytelling. The timing: the Crave and HBO Max series premiered on November 28, 2025, season 2 adapting The Long Game is due in 2027, and Reid’s next Game Changers novel, Unrivaled, has been pushed to 2027 too, so a lot of viewers are reading the books for the first time. Here is the chapter map, spoiler-light.

Is Heated Rivalry Spicy?

Very. Heated Rivalry is an explicit, open-door MM romance where the hookups are the structure of the book: for most of its length, the only time Shane and Ilya are alone together is in bed, and what changes between scenes is how much they’re willing to say. Most chapters in the first half contain or follow an encounter, and the scenes are detailed and on the page. Adult readers only, 18+.

Heated Rivalry Spicy Chapters List

We cross-checked three chapter guides: Swooon’s book-scene guide, the Heated Rivalry Wiki’s timeline and a chapter-by-chapter summary from UrSummary. Every chapter below appears in at least two of them. Descriptions are non-graphic and avoid the big plot turns.

  1. Prologue: the book opens in October 2016 with Shane and Ilya already deep into their secret, at Shane’s private condo after a game. You start in the middle of the arrangement. Full on-page scene.
  2. Chapter 4: the first hookup. July 2010, Toronto, a hotel room after a commercial shoot, and Shane’s first time with a man. The scene the whole rivalry pivots on. Full on-page scene.
  3. Chapter 6: the reunion. All-Star weekend in Nashville, a hotel room and the start of a pattern. Full on-page scene.
  4. Chapter 7: the first time they go all the way, in a Montreal hotel room, February 2011. Full on-page scene.
  5. Chapter 8: the first kiss. A desperate kiss on a Las Vegas hotel rooftop that ends when Shane pulls away. After all the sex, the kiss is the line they weren’t supposed to cross. Kiss only.
  6. Chapter 9: December 2013, the Montreal condo Shane bought for exactly this. Shorter and less detailed than the earlier scenes.
  7. Chapter 11: Las Vegas again, June 2014, a penthouse after the awards and two encounters with a control dynamic. Our pick for the most intense scene in the book. Full on-page scene.
  8. Chapter 13: Ilya’s Boston penthouse, November 2016. The first time they use each other’s first names, and the first scene that reads like romance rather than release. Full on-page scene.
  9. Chapter 20: the call. Ilya is in Moscow after his father’s death and a late-night call turns sexual: no physical contact, but explicit.
  10. Chapter 23: the cottage. Summer 2017, a remote lake house in Ontario, and the first time they have real time and privacy. Steamy, with the emotional reveals starting.
  11. Chapter 25: the love confession at the cottage, with long-term plans and an on-page scene. The most romantic chapter in the book.
  12. Chapter 26: the dock. A passionate kiss outside that gets interrupted by Shane’s father. Heated but brief.

Where the guides differ: Swooon also lists a brief scene around Chapter 18, where they break their rule about hooking up before playing each other, and a final scene in Chapter 27. The other two guides describe those chapters without a hookup, so treat them as “around” rather than confirmed.

How the Heat Changes Across the Book

The first half (chapters 4 to 11) is all hotel rooms: years pass between chapters, the two of them meet once or twice a season and the scenes are hungry and wordless. That’s deliberate. Reid uses the sex to show what they can’t say, which is why the first kiss in Chapter 8 lands harder than anything before it. The second half slows down. From Chapter 13 they’re talking, from Chapter 19 they’re grieving and by the cottage chapters the scenes are about trust rather than relief. If you’re reading for heat, the first half is hotter. If you’re reading for Shane and Ilya, the cottage is the point.

If you watched the show first, the book is more explicit, more detailed and much more inside both men’s heads. Chapters 4, 7, 11 and 25 are the ones that add the most.

How Spicy Is Heated Rivalry Compared To…

  • The Long Game (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️): the sequel keeps the heat but spends more of the book on what the relationship costs them. Our books like The Long Game list picks up from there.
  • Icebreaker (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️): similar rating, but Hannah Grace spreads nine scenes across a long friend-group novel. Heated Rivalry is denser and more explicit scene for scene. Our Icebreaker spicy chapters guide has that map.
  • Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️): the other big MM hockey romance, about the same heat, with friends-to-lovers in place of rivals.
  • Fourth Wing (🌶️🌶️🌶️): two full scenes in 39 chapters. If you came to Heated Rivalry from romantasy, expect about six times the heat.
  • Twisted Love (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️): comparable explicitness, with a possessive billionaire instead of a rival captain.

Our romance spice levels guide explains the chili scale used above.

If You Wanted It Hotter: A Fractal Enigma Bonus Scene

Rival captains, a secret the league can’t find out about and a bonus chapter that’s more explicit than the novel it comes from. Chase Power wrote the Heated Rivalry setup with the timeline compressed into a single season and the door never closing.

Enemies in the Penalty Box — Chase Power

Enemies in the Penalty Box by Chase Power book cover

Two rival captains. One penalty box. Ethan Cole is hockey’s golden boy: the youngest captain in Boston Titans history, a four-time All-Star and the face every sponsor wants, with anxiety underneath and a hunger for praise he was raised to think he’d never earn. Rory Kincaid is hockey’s favorite villain. A forced PR campaign puts them side by side, and the hatred turns into something neither of them can control. Shane’s polish, Ilya’s mouth, and a love that won’t stay hidden.

The bonus chapter: “The Connecting Door” takes place between Chapters 12 and 13, when the relationship is new, the praise kink is fully switched on and the world doesn’t know yet. It’s the uncut version, significantly more explicit than the published novel, including a role reversal. Read the book, then read the Enemies in the Penalty Box bonus chapter.
