Kindle+ Free Trial: How to Get It (and Cancel Before You’re Charged)

Kindle Unlimited is now called Kindle+, and the free trial came along with the rename. If you’ve been meaning to try Amazon’s reading subscription, this is the guide: who gets a trial, how to start one, how to cancel before the first charge, and what to borrow so the free month actually earns its keep.

The Kindle+ Free Trial at a Glance

  • Who gets it: eligible customers, usually new members or people who haven’t had a trial recently.
  • What you get: the full Kindle+ library, with up to 20 borrows at a time from more than 5 million ebooks, plus comics, magazines and titles with included audio.
  • What it costs afterward: $11.99 a month plus tax in the US, unless you cancel.
  • How long it lasts: it depends on your account. Amazon shows your exact offer on the sign-up page before you confirm.

Are You Eligible?

Amazon decides eligibility account by account. In general, you’ll see a free trial if you’ve never subscribed, or if it’s been a while since your last trial or membership. If you were a Kindle Unlimited member until recently, you probably won’t get a new trial just because of the rename. Existing members were moved to Kindle+ automatically.

The fastest way to find out is to open the sign-up page while you’re logged in. Amazon tells you what you qualify for before you commit to anything.

How to Start the Trial

  1. Sign in to your Amazon account on the web or in the Amazon app.
  2. Open the Kindle+ sign-up page using the link on this page.
  3. Read the offer box. It shows the trial length and the price you’ll pay when it ends.
  4. Confirm your payment method. You won’t be charged during the trial, but Amazon needs a card on file for the renewal.
  5. Start borrowing. Any book with the Kindle+ badge is now free to read. Download the free Kindle app if you don’t have a Kindle.

Promos to Watch For

Amazon regularly runs longer or cheaper trials, especially around Prime Day, its fall Prime sale and Black Friday. This year, eligible Prime members were offered three free months of Kindle Unlimited in a promotion that ran through October 8, 2026. Offers like that come and go and vary by account, so don’t wait for one if the standard trial suits you.

How to Cancel Before You’re Charged

Set a reminder the day you sign up. Then, when you’re ready to decide:

  1. Go to Your Account on Amazon and open Memberships & Subscriptions.
  2. Find Kindle+ and choose to cancel or turn off auto-renewal.
  3. Confirm. Amazon will show the date your access ends.

Canceling during the trial usually doesn’t cut you off on the spot. You can keep reading until the trial period runs out. After that, your borrowed books go back automatically. Kindle+ is a library, not a store, so nothing you borrowed stays on your device after the membership ends.

Make the Free Month Count

A trial pays off when you read hard and sample widely. A few habits help:

  • Borrow series, not standalones. Romance series are where the subscription saves the most, because you’d otherwise buy every book.
  • Try new authors on purpose. A free month is the cheapest time to test indie authors you’d hesitate to buy.
  • Use the audio. Look for the headphone icon next to the Kindle+ badge for titles you can listen to as well as read. Our Kindle+ audiobooks guide explains how.
  • Return as you go. The limit is 20 books at once, so return finished books to keep borrowing.

What to Read First

We publish most of our catalog in Kindle+, rated on a five-chili heat scale, so you can start with any of these shelves:

Not sure the subscription is for you at all? Our Kindle+ review for romance readers runs the break-even math, our Kindle+ vs. Audible guide helps if you mostly listen, and our free books hub lets you sample our writing with no sign-up at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kindle+ free trial the same as the old Kindle Unlimited trial?

Yes. Kindle+ is the new name for Kindle Unlimited, and the trial works the same way. Amazon shows your exact offer on the sign-up page.

Can I get another free trial if I had Kindle Unlimited before?

Maybe, depending on how long ago your last membership or trial was. The rename doesn’t reset eligibility, so check the sign-up page while you’re logged in.

Will I be charged if I cancel on the last day?

Cancel before the renewal date shown in Memberships & Subscriptions and you won’t be charged. Doing it a day or two early is the safe move.

Do I keep the books I borrowed during the trial?

No. Borrowed books go back when your membership ends. Books you want to keep are worth buying outright.

Does the Kindle+ trial include audiobooks?

Titles with included audio are part of the trial. Look for the headphone icon next to the Kindle+ badge. At launch, the expanded audiobook listening is available to US subscribers.
