Kindle Unlimited Is Now Kindle+: What Changed for Romance Readers (2026)
If you opened the Kindle app this week and saw a Kindle+ badge where the Kindle Unlimited logo used to be, nothing is broken. Amazon started renaming Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+ on book pages around October 22, 2026. It’s the same subscription, the same price and the same library under a new name, with one change romance readers will actually notice: a lot more audio.

The Short Version
- Kindle Unlimited is now called Kindle+. It’s a rename of the same subscription, not a new product.
- The price hasn’t changed. It’s still $11.99 a month in the US, and it’s still a separate subscription from Prime.
- The rules haven’t changed. You can still borrow up to 20 titles at a time, from ebooks to comics and magazines.
- There’s more audio. Amazon added thousands of audiobooks, including some narrated by AI.
- Current members don’t need to do anything. The switch happened automatically.
What Actually Changed
The name and the badge
Book pages that used to say “Free with Kindle Unlimited” now carry the Kindle+ badge instead. If you search for books with the old name, you’ll land in the same place. Amazon simply updated the branding across its site and help pages.
A much bigger audiobook shelf
This is the real upgrade. Kindle+ added thousands of audiobooks to the catalog, including audiobooks from independent authors. Some of them are narrated by Virtual Voice, the AI narration tool Amazon offers to Kindle Direct Publishing authors. Titles that include audio show a headphone icon next to the Kindle+ badge, so you can spot listen-included books before you borrow. Our guide to finding romance audiobooks on Kindle+ walks through how to use it.
Audio is US-only for now
The new audiobook listening launched for US subscribers first. Amazon says more countries will follow but hasn’t given dates, so readers outside the US should expect the ebook side to work as before.
What Didn’t Change
- Price: $11.99 a month plus tax in the US.
- Prime: Kindle+ is still not included with Amazon Prime. Prime Reading is the smaller catalog that comes with Prime.
- Devices: you don’t need a Kindle. The free Kindle app works on phones, tablets, computers and the web.
- Borrow limit: up to 20 titles at a time.
- The catalog: more than 5 million ebooks, plus comics, manga and magazines. Titles still rotate in and out as authors change their plans.
Do You Need to Do Anything?
No. If you were a Kindle Unlimited member, you’re a Kindle+ member now. Your borrowed books, your borrow limit and your account settings carried over automatically. You won’t be charged differently, and there’s nothing to re-subscribe to.

What Kindle+ Means for Romance Readers
Romance has always been Kindle Unlimited’s home turf. The program is where indie romance lives: dark romance, hockey and sports romance, why-choose, sapphic and MM, monster romance and every heat level past where traditional publishers stop. That shelf hasn’t gone anywhere. It just has a new badge on it.
We’ll be honest about our angle: Fractal Enigma publishes most of its catalog in Kindle Unlimited, which means our books are now Kindle+ books. Books enrolled in KDP Select, the program behind the subscription, were moved into Kindle+ automatically. If you’ve been reading us on KU, you don’t have to change a thing.
The audio expansion is the part we’re most interested in. More romances with included narration means more books you can switch between reading and listening, on the commute and in bed. Expect that shelf to grow quickly as authors add narration to books that are already in the program.

Is Kindle+ Worth It?
The math is the same as it was under the old name. If you read two or more romances a month, the subscription usually pays for itself, and the extra audio makes that easier. Our honest review of whether Kindle+ is worth it for romance readers runs the full numbers. If you mostly listen, compare it with Audible in our Kindle+ vs. Audible guide. And if you’ve never subscribed, our Kindle+ free trial guide explains how to try it and cancel before you’re charged.
