He trained me to follow orders. Then he gave me one I couldn’t resist.
Tyler “Ty” Brooks is a reckless probationary firefighter with a death wish he won’t admit to. He keeps throwing himself into danger to prove himself, terrifying everyone on his crew — especially his stone-cold lieutenant. Benched twice, written up twice, and one more violation from losing his career, Ty is running out of chances.
Lieutenant Evan Reyes is a veteran firefighter who’s spent five years carrying the guilt of a man who lost his leg under his command. When he sees the same reckless pattern in his new probie, he pulls Ty aside for “retraining” — one-on-one drills designed to teach discipline through structure, calm authority, and praise-based conditioning.
But the training sessions expose something neither of them expected: Ty doesn’t just respond to Evan’s commands. He needs them. And the praise that makes him a better firefighter is the same praise that makes him come undone. As the drills blur into something far more personal, Evan discovers that the reckless kid craving his approval is becoming the man he can’t live without.
When a near-fatal call forces Evan to confront his deepest fear — loving someone he can’t keep safe — the walls go back up and the silence threatens to destroy everything they’ve built. Now Ty must prove that the discipline Evan taught him was never about obedience. It was about having someone worth coming home to.

Chapter One: First Through the Door
The tones dropped at 2:47 AM, and I was already awake.
I’d been staring at the ceiling of my bunk for the better part of an hour, listening to Sully snore three beds over. Sleep and I had a complicated relationship — mostly, it avoided me, and I pretended not to care.
But the tones? The tones were a love letter.
Two sharp blasts, then dispatch cutting through the static: “Engine Four, Ladder Two, Battalion Seven — structure fire, 1847 Delancey Avenue. Two-story residential, heavy smoke showing from the second floor. Reports of occupants still inside.”
And then there was Lieutenant Reyes.
He stood at the officer’s door of the engine like he’d been carved from something denser than the rest of us. Those dark eyes sweeping the bay with the steady focus of a man cataloging every variable. He didn’t rush. He didn’t raise his voice.
“Engine Four responding, two-story residential, Delancey Avenue. Full company aboard.”
His voice through the radio was the same as his voice in person — low, even, and absolutely certain. He didn’t command attention. He occupied it.
I found him in the back bedroom. An old man, seventies maybe, on the floor between the bed and the wall. Unconscious, not coughing anymore. I hauled him onto my shoulder in a fireman’s carry that my academy instructor would have called “technically adequate and strategically suicidal.”
Behind me, inside the house, something collapsed. The second-floor hallway ceiling had come down. Right where I’d been standing maybe forty-five seconds earlier.
“Brooks.” That voice.
He was calm. “Walk with me,” he said.
“You have talent, Brooks. You’re fast, you’re brave, and your instincts in a fire are better than most guys I’ve seen with ten years on. That’s not flattery. That’s an assessment.” He paused. “It’s also what makes you the most dangerous person on my crew.”
The word me landed like a fist in my sternum.
“You will follow orders. You will trust your team. You will not leave your partner again. That’s not a suggestion. That’s the price of staying in my house.”
“Dismissed, Brooks.”
The worst part of the entire night wasn’t the fire or the collapsing ceiling. The worst part was disappointing him.
I sat on the rear bumper of the engine and replayed the lieutenant’s words on a loop. You have talent, Brooks. It shouldn’t have felt like a prize. It wasn’t meant as one.
But my chest was warm where the words had landed, and I pressed my hand against it like I could hold them there.
And then, quieter, underneath, in a voice I barely recognized as my own: Tell me again.
