The Official’s Uniform
The box arrived on a Thursday.
Iona hadn’t told Maren she was picking it up. She’d gone to the league office during lunch — the new office, the one with her name on the door and the player-safety data on her monitors and the view of the parking garage that she’d learned to love — and she’d asked the storage coordinator for the container labeled PRICE, I. — EQUIPMENT, RETIRED.
The box held everything: her last officiating uniform, her whistle, her helmet, her skates, her arm bands. The tools of a career she’d left behind. She’d put them in storage after accepting the policy role and hadn’t looked at them since.
She carried the box to the car. Sat in the driver’s seat for five minutes, hands on the wheel, thinking about what she was about to do. Then she drove home, set the box on the bed, and spent forty minutes getting ready with the particular attention to detail that she reserved for moments that mattered.
The eyeliner went on last. Sharp enough to perform surgery. Black, precise, applied with a hand that did not shake, because Iona Price’s hands did not shake — not when she made calls on national television, not when she filed whistleblower reports, and not when she was about to do something that would make her girlfriend’s brain short-circuit.
She unzipped the uniform bag. Pulled out the jersey. Black and white stripes, fitted, the fabric carrying the faint memory of arena cold and adrenaline. She zipped it to the collar. Put on the black officiating pants. Threaded the whistle lanyard over her head, letting the silver whistle settle against her sternum, right between her breasts. Snapped the arm bands into place.
She looked at herself in the mirror. The woman who looked back was not the policy director who ate sour candy during video review and organized her closet by fabric weight. The woman who looked back was the official — composed, precise, untouchable. The version of herself that Maren had been fantasizing about since the first game misconduct.
She texted Maren: Come home early. I have something for you.
Maren responded in eleven seconds: On my way.
She arrived in twenty-two minutes, which meant she’d left the arena before her skates were fully unlaced. She came through the apartment door smelling like ice and exertion and cinnamon gum, her hair damp, her gym bag over one shoulder, her eyes already scanning the apartment for whatever Iona had promised.
“What’s the —”
She stopped. Her bag hit the floor. Her mouth opened. No sound came out.
Iona was standing in the bedroom doorway, leaning against the frame the way she’d leaned against the boards during intermissions — casual, controlled, as if the uniform were something she wore every Thursday and not a weapon of targeted devastation.
“Hi,” Iona said.
“You’re wearing — that’s your —” Maren’s voice cracked on the second word. Her eyes were traveling down the uniform — the stripes, the whistle, the arm bands — with the expression of a woman whose deepest fantasy had just materialized in her hallway wearing eyeliner and an attitude.
“Official’s uniform. Retired. No longer associated with any active league authority, any game assignment, or any professional relationship involving discipline or eligibility.” Iona tilted her chin up — the gesture from the ice, the one that said I am five-seven and I will look up at you and you will still feel like I’m looking down. “Purely recreational.”
“I’m going to die,” Maren said.
“You’re going to do exactly what I tell you.”
The shudder that went through Maren was visible from across the room — a full-body tremor that started at her shoulders and rolled down to her knees. Her hands curled at her sides. Her jaw went rigid. And her eyes — those dark, fierce, fight-everything eyes — went soft in a way that only happened here, in this apartment, with this woman.
“Tell me the rules,” Maren said. Her voice was already wrecked, and Iona hadn’t touched her.
Iona crossed the room. Each step deliberate, measured, the same unhurried pace she’d used skating toward penalties. She stopped in front of Maren. Close enough that the whistle caught the hallway light. Close enough that Maren’s breathing was audible — fast, shallow, the respiratory pattern of a woman whose body had decided this was an emergency and was responding accordingly.
“Rule one.” Iona placed one finger on Maren’s chest. Pushed gently until Maren’s back hit the wall. “You don’t touch the uniform until I tell you to.”
“Okay.”
“Rule two.” She let her finger trail down Maren’s sternum, over her sports bra, along the zipper of her team jacket. “Every time you break a rule, I add two minutes.”
“Two minutes of what?”
“Of whatever I decide.” She leaned in. Her lips grazed the shell of Maren’s ear, close enough that her breath raised goosebumps down Maren’s neck. “Rule three: you call me official.”
“Yes, official.” The words came out breathless, desperate, from a woman who had spent her entire career defying authority and was now surrendering to it with a hunger that would have shocked everyone who’d ever watched her play hockey.
“Good.” Iona pulled back. Studied Maren’s face the way she studied game film — every detail cataloged, every response noted, every tell filed for future reference. “Now strip.”
Maren reached for her jacket zipper. Her hands were shaking — Maren Vuković, whose hands were steady enough to tape her own stick before every game, whose hands had delivered a thousand clean checks, whose hands had held Iona through nightmares and orgasms and everything in between — her hands were shaking because a woman in a striped jersey had told her to take off her clothes.
She unzipped the jacket. Pulled it off. The T-shirt underneath was damp with sweat from practice, clinging to her shoulders and chest. She pulled it over her head. Unhooked her sports bra. Stood bare from the waist up, the swallow tattoo visible on her ribs, her chest heaving with breaths that were coming too fast for someone standing still.
Iona’s gaze traveled over her with the professional assessment of an official reviewing a play — thorough, unhurried, cataloging every detail. The breadth of her shoulders. The defined muscles of her arms. The scars on her knuckles. The tattoo, dark ink against olive skin, the small bird she touched when she missed home.
“Continue,” Iona said.
Maren pushed her athletic pants down her legs, stepped out of them. Her underwear followed — black, simple, removed with fingers that fumbled on the waistband because fine motor control had apparently left the building along with her ability to form complete sentences.
She stood against the wall. Naked. Exposed. The most penalized player in league history stripped bare in her own hallway by a woman in an official’s uniform who hadn’t touched her yet.
“Hands at your sides,” Iona said. “Don’t move them until I say.”
Maren’s hands dropped. Her fingers pressed against the wall behind her, seeking something solid, something to hold onto while the rest of her dissolved.
Iona stepped closer. Close enough that the fabric of the jersey brushed Maren’s bare stomach, and the contact — rough polyester against heated skin — made Maren’s abdominal muscles contract visibly.
“You’re being very good,” Iona murmured.
The praise hit Maren like a physical blow. Her eyes fluttered shut. Her head fell back against the wall. A sound escaped her throat — low, involuntary, the kind of sound that came from the place underneath every defense she’d ever built.
Iona pressed her mouth to Maren’s throat. Kissed the pulse point that was hammering under the skin. Tasted salt and heat and the particular flavor of a woman who was vibrating with need and holding herself still through sheer force of will.
She kissed lower. Maren’s collarbone. The hollow at the base of her throat. The upper curve of her breast, where the skin was soft and Maren’s breathing stuttered. She took her time — the same devastating patience she’d used the first time they were together, the controlled, methodical attention that treated Maren’s body like something worth studying.
Her mouth found Maren’s nipple. She drew it between her lips, sucked gently, then harder, and Maren’s back arched off the wall and a noise came out of her that was closer to a sob than a moan.
“Stay still.”
“I’m trying — fuck, Iona — official — I’m trying —”
“Try harder.”
Iona moved to the other breast. Same treatment — mouth, tongue, the scrape of teeth that made Maren’s hands leave the wall and grab for Iona’s shoulders before she caught herself and slammed them back.
“Rule violation,” Iona said against her skin. “Two minutes added.”
“Worth it.”
“You keep saying that.” Iona sank to her knees. The position put her face at the level of Maren’s stomach, her ribs, the swallow tattoo. She pressed her mouth to the ink — the ritual, their ritual, the one that said I see this and I honor it — and felt Maren’s whole body shudder under the tenderness.
Then she moved lower. Kissed Maren’s hip bone. Her inner thigh. The crease where leg met torso, where the skin was thin and sensitive and Maren’s hips jerked involuntarily at the contact.
“Official — please —”
“Please what?”
“Touch me. I need — please, I need you to —”
“Tell me the rule you broke.”
Their game. Their reclamation. The language they’d converted from institutional power into private intimacy, the penalty-box vocabulary repurposed into the vocabulary of desire.
“I wanted the official,” Maren whispered.
“And what’s the penalty?”
“Whatever you say it is.”
“The penalty,” Iona said, her breath warm against the inside of Maren’s thigh, “is that you stand there and take what I give you. You don’t touch me. You don’t move your hands. And you don’t come until I tell you.”
“I don’t know if I can —”
“You can. You’ve held a defensive position for ninety-second shifts in overtime. You can hold this.”
She put her mouth on her.
Maren’s head cracked against the wall. The sound she made was loud enough to carry through the apartment, through the walls, into the corridor where their neighbors were hopefully not home. It was the sound of a woman being destroyed with precision — not the explosive, consuming destruction of their early encounters but the surgical, exacting destruction of a woman who had studied her partner’s body like game film and knew exactly which play to call.
Iona’s tongue found Maren’s clit and worked it with the focused, relentless accuracy of an official who had never made an incorrect call in her career. She knew the pressure Maren needed — firm, direct, without the teasing variations that other lovers had used as if Maren’s orgasm were a toy to be played with. Iona didn’t play. She executed. She found the spot and she stayed on it with the consistency of a metronome, and Maren’s thighs began to shake within thirty seconds.
“Oh god — right there — don’t stop, don’t —”
Iona slid two fingers inside her. Maren was so wet that the entry was frictionless, and the sound it produced — slick, intimate, unmistakable — made both of them moan. Iona curled her fingers forward, found the textured spot on the front wall, and pressed.
Maren’s body bowed. Her hands left the wall — both of them, gripping Iona’s hair, pulling her closer, her hips rolling against Iona’s mouth with the desperate, rhythmic urgency of a woman who was seconds away from detonation.
“I said don’t move your hands.” Iona pulled back. Just an inch. Just enough that the contact broke and Maren’s whole body screamed with the loss.
“No — please — official, please, I’m sorry, I’ll keep them still, please don’t stop —”
“Hands on the wall.”
Maren slammed her palms against the wall so hard the framed photo in the hallway rattled.
Iona returned her mouth. Resumed the exact pressure, the exact rhythm, as if she’d paused a recording and hit play. Her fingers curled inside Maren and her tongue circled Maren’s clit and the combination was devastating — the internal pressure and the external precision working in concert, building toward something that Maren could feel gathering at the base of her spine like a wave about to break.
“Please — I need to come — official, please, I can’t hold —”
“You can hold. You’re being so good for me. So patient. So still.” Iona’s voice was commanding and tender simultaneously, the particular tone she’d developed for moments when Maren needed both authority and care. “Tell me what you feel.”
“Everything — I feel everything — your mouth, your fingers, the fucking stripes against my legs, I can feel the whistle chain on my thigh — I feel you and I can’t — I need —”
“Now.”
Maren came with a sound that would have earned a noise complaint in a stadium. Her body seized — thighs clamping around Iona’s head, hands fisting against the wall, hips bucking forward as the orgasm ripped through her in waves. Iona held her through it, mouth still working, fingers still moving, drawing every last tremor from Maren’s body until she was shaking and gasping and sliding down the wall because her legs had stopped functioning as structural elements.
Iona caught her. Eased her to the floor. Cradled her against the striped jersey while Maren’s body went through the aftershocks — the involuntary twitches, the ragged breathing, the particular full-body vulnerability of a woman who had just been taken apart by someone she trusted enough to let see her like this.
“Penalty assessed,” Iona whispered against Maren’s hair. “Two minutes for illegal use of hands.”
“Worth every second.” Maren’s voice was destroyed. She pressed her face against the striped jersey and breathed in — polyester and Iona’s perfume and the faint ghost of arena cold. “You are — that was — I have no words.”
“The woman who called me Price Tag on national television has no words. I should mark the occasion.”
Maren laughed. Weak, breathless, the laughter of someone who had been wrecked and was happy about it. Then she pulled back. Looked at Iona. And her eyes — still dark, still hungry, not remotely finished — focused on the zipper of the official’s jersey with an intensity that made Iona’s stomach drop.
