He’s the captain who holds everything together. He’s the chaos everyone watches. Neither of them expected to fall apart — together.

Noah Hart is the quiet, disciplined captain of the Chicago Titans — the man everyone leans on and no one really knows. He’s spent thirty years earning love through performance and hiding everything else behind a locked door. He doesn’t need anyone. He’s made sure of it.

Cade Tate is the loud, charming, media-magnet winger who just got traded to Chicago. He’s built his whole life on being impossible to ignore, because the alternative — being forgotten — is something he learned to fear in foster care. He fills every room he enters. He’s terrified they’re all temporary.

When a shared hotel room, a late-night confession, and one devastating kiss bring them together, Noah realizes he’s the one person who actually sees Cade — and Cade realizes he’s the one person who can make Noah feel.

But they’re teammates. Noah’s closeted. The media is watching. And when the pressure of a playoff run collides with the terror of being truly known, they’ll have to decide: protect the secret, or fight for something real — even if it means letting the whole world in.

Chapter One: Noah

The thing about being the guy everyone leans on is that nobody ever asks if you’re tired.

I taped my stick the same way I’d taped it for twelve years — three wraps at the toe, tight spiral up the blade, one clean tear at the top. Same brand. Same tension. Same ritual I’d done since I was eighteen and too scared to admit I had rituals, because my dad would’ve called it superstition and superstition was for guys who didn’t trust their fundamentals.

The locker room smelled like it always did before opening night — fresh ice, industrial cleaner, and the nervous sweat of twenty-two men pretending they weren’t nervous. Music thumped from Kelsey’s speaker at the far end. Some rap remix I didn’t recognize and wouldn’t ask about because I was thirty and that ship had sailed.

“Cap.” Briggs dropped onto the bench next to me, already half-dressed, his chest protector hanging loose. “You see the lines?”

“I saw them.”

“Coach moved Petrov to the second unit.”

“I saw that too.”

“And?”

I looked at him. Briggs was twenty-four, a second-year defenseman with fast hands and the emotional regulation of a golden retriever. Good kid. Played hard. Needed constant reassurance that the world wasn’t ending.

“And Petrov’s been skating like shit in the preseason, so he’s on the second unit until he stops skating like shit.” I tore the tape. “That’s how lines work.”

“Right. Yeah. Okay.” He bounced his knee twice, then stood up. “Good talk, Cap.”

I watched him walk back to his stall, already looking for the next person to tell him things were fine. That was the job. Not the hockey — I mean, yes, the hockey. But the other part. The part where you absorb everyone’s anxiety and metabolize it into calm so they can go out and play loose.

My dad had a phrase for it. The captain eats last. He meant it as a compliment. I’d always heard it as a warning.
