A recently divorced firefighter begins anonymously calling a seductive late-night advice host about his growing attraction to men—never realizing the voice guiding him belongs to the infuriating paramedic he argues with every shift.
Lieutenant Gideon March knows how to handle emergencies. He does not know how to handle wanting a man. After a brutal shift and another failed date, one accidental call to a late-night relationship show turns into a weekly confession. Hidden behind the name Northside, Gideon tells the seductive host everything he cannot admit in daylight—especially his growing attraction to the infuriating paramedic who challenges him at every scene.
Ari Lennox is sharp, confident, and impossible to intimidate. As Dr. After Dark, he’s the late-night voice that asks the questions no one else will. He recognized Gideon’s voice on the first call. By day, Ari fights with Gideon over protocols and control. After midnight, he becomes the voice Gideon trusts with his most private desires.
The calls escalate from confession to guided fantasy to something neither of them can take back. When the man behind the microphone is finally revealed, their attraction is no longer the greatest danger. Trust is.
Gideon called looking for answers that would leave his life unchanged. Ari may be the answer that changes everything.

Chapter One: The Wrong Call
The chicken parm was fine.
That was the problem. The chicken parm was fine, and the wine was fine, and Lauren was fine—pretty, smart, laughed at the right moments, touched my wrist once when she made a point about property taxes. She was a dental hygienist from Rittenhouse who liked hiking and rescue dogs and had kind eyes and great tits and absolutely nothing about her made me want to stay past dessert.
I said something about an early shift. She said she understood. We split the check because she insisted, and I walked her to her car, and she tilted her chin up in that way women do when they’re giving you the opening, and I kissed her on the cheek like a fucking uncle.
Five dates in eight months. Five perfectly fine women. Five times I drove home afterward feeling like I’d sat through a job interview for a position I hadn’t applied for.
I pulled onto I-76 with the windows cracked, October air cutting through the cab of my truck. Philadelphia at eleven p.m. was all brake lights and bridge reflections on the Schuylkill, and I should have been thinking about tomorrow’s shift or the leaking radiator in the upstairs bathroom or whether I needed to call my father back before the weekend.
Instead I was thinking about hands.
Lauren’s hands had been small, manicured, a thin gold ring on her index finger. When she’d touched my wrist, I’d felt the pressure but not the heat. Not the thing that makes your pulse change direction.
I flipped through radio stations without listening. Static. Pop song. Commercial for a mattress store. Country. More static.
Then a voice.
Low. Male. Unhurried in a way that felt deliberate, like every word had been weighed before it left his mouth. Not a DJ voice—no performance in it. Just warmth and a kind of focused attention that came through the speakers like someone leaning close in a dark room.
“—and I think the real question isn’t whether you’re attracted to him. You already know the answer to that. The question is whether you’re more afraid of wanting him or more afraid of what wanting him turns you into.”
I turned up the volume.
The caller—another man, younger-sounding, nervous—said something about not being that kind of person. That he’d always dated women. That he loved women. That this one specific guy at his gym had started showing up in his head at inconvenient times, and he didn’t know what to do with it.
The host waited. Let the silence stretch until it had texture. Then:
“You keep saying you’re not that kind of person. But you called me at midnight to talk about him. What kind of person does that make you?”
I pulled over.
Just eased the truck onto the shoulder near the Girard Avenue exit and sat there with the engine idling and my hands too tight on the wheel. The caller was stumbling through an answer—something about confusion, about just wanting to understand—and the host cut through it without being cruel.
“Understanding isn’t the same as permission. You already understand. What you want is someone to tell you it’s okay to stop pretending you don’t.”
My chest hurt. Not pain—pressure. Like a door I’d been leaning against had just shifted in its frame.
