She needed a fake girlfriend to save her season. She picked the publicist who wrote the rules against dating clients.

Sage Morales is the celebrated striker for the New York Comets: fast, magnetic, ruthlessly private, and currently one viral breakup away from losing the sponsorship that funds her family’s future.

When a shaky video catches Sage arguing with her ex outside a Manhattan club, the internet decides she’s a toxic, closeted player. Her club hires Dahlia Kim—a queer crisis publicist with an iron rule against dating clients—to save her image.

Dahl’s solution is brutally practical: Sage needs a visible, uncomplicated girlfriend.

Sage has the nerve to ask Dahl to play the role.

What starts as a strategic performance—staged farmers’ market dates, rehearsed hand-holding, one carefully managed public image—becomes something neither of them planned for. Because Sage kisses like she plays: precise and devastating. And Dahl’s composure cracks every time Sage says her name.

But Dahl swore she’d never be anyone’s secret again. And Sage has spent her whole career making the people she loves invisible.

With a championship on the line, a corrupt club owner threatening to trade Sage, and a team of women ready to fight for their own, they’ll have to decide what’s real—and whether being seen together is worth the risk of losing everything.

A fake relationship. A real playoff run. One athlete who has to stop treating love like a career-ending injury.

Chapter One: The Video

The ball came off the corner kick too high and too fast, the kind of cross that separates the brave from the smart. I was neither. I was just desperate.

Eighty-ninth minute. Tied one-one against Portland in front of nineteen thousand people who’d paid good money to watch us grind out another disappointing draw. The season was slipping. My hamstring was barking. And somewhere in the back of my skull, underneath the noise and the adrenaline and the absolute refusal to lose another match we should’ve won, a small quiet voice was saying something is wrong with your phone.

I’d felt it buzzing in my locker before warmups. Not the normal buzz—agent checking in, Nora sending memes, Mama confirming Sunday dinner. This was the sustained, rolling vibration of a phone being murdered by notifications. I’d ignored it. You have to. The pitch is the one place where the rest of the world isn’t allowed to touch you.

So I watched the ball arc through the floodlights, tracked its spin, and threw my body at it.

The header connected clean. Forehead to leather, that perfect hollow thud you feel more than hear. The ball arrowed past the keeper’s fingertips and buried itself in the side netting, and for exactly three seconds the universe was simple. Ball in net. Crowd screaming. Imani grabbing my face with both hands and yelling something I couldn’t hear over the roar.

We won. I scored. Everything else could wait.

Everything else did not wait.

The locker room was still loud when I got to my phone.
