Two roommates. Six rules. One experiment that was never supposed to become everything.

Evan Marsh arrives at college with an eight-year plan, a purity ring in a drawer, and a browser history he blames on the algorithm. He’s never kissed anyone. He’s definitely straight. He just needs to stop noticing his new roommate’s shoulders.

Mason Reyes is a biology major who treats life like data — including the part where he’s quietly bi and has never been with a guy. When he catches Evan in a compromising moment, he makes an offer that changes everything: treat sex like a lab. Hypotheses. Controlled variables. Weekly sessions. No labels. No feelings. No one can ever know.

They draft rules on a notebook page. They sign it. And then they start experimenting — kissing that turns into grinding, hands that won’t stay above the waist, mouths that learn each other in the lamplight of a locked dorm room. Every lab pushes the line. Every session rewrites the protocol. And somewhere between the first kiss and the first time, the experiment stops being about curiosity and starts being about the most terrifying variable of all: what happens when the data says you’re in love with your roommate, and your whole world says you can’t be.

Set in a conservative dorm with thin walls and an RA who walks the halls, The Roommate Hypothesis is a dual-POV, high-heat MM romance about two men discovering themselves — and each other — one lab at a time.

You’ll love this book if you enjoy:

✅ Roommates to lovers with double bi awakening
✅ “Experimental pact” that’s really just an excuse to touch each other
✅ First times for everything — first kiss, first touch, first time
✅ Praise kink that starts as teaching and becomes worship
✅ Secret relationship under a conservative RA’s nose
✅ One bed (the boiler did it)
✅ Inferno heat — graphic, explicit, emotional (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️)
✅ HEA guaranteed

⚠️ Content Warning: This novel contains explicit sexual content (graphic MM scenes), strong language, religious guilt and internalized homophobia themes, and depictions of anxiety related to coming out. Intended for readers 18+.

Chapter One

Evan

The housing portal had said single occupancy. Evan had read it eleven times over the summer, the way other people reread acceptance letters. Hartwell Hall, Room 214, single occupancy. He’d built his entire mental model of freshman year around those two words — a door he could close, a space where nobody would watch him, judge him, ask him questions he didn’t have answers to.

The girl at the check-in table popped her gum and slid a keycard across the folding table like she was dealing him a bad hand.

“Yeah, so, there was a flood in Whitfield over the summer. Pipes. We had to consolidate.” She didn’t look up from her laptop. “You’re in 214, but it’s a double now. Your roommate checked in yesterday.”

“I’m sorry — my what?”

“Roommate.” Pop. “Mason Reyes. Sophomore. He’s chill, I’ve met him.”

“There must be a mistake. I have the confirmation email. It says single.”

“And then there was a flood,” she said, with the patience of someone who had already had this conversation forty times today, “and now it says double. You can file an appeal with Res Life. There’s a waitlist. It’s like sixty people long.”

Behind him, a father balancing a mini-fridge cleared his throat. Evan picked up the keycard. His hand was steady. His hands were always steady — he’d trained them to be, the way he’d trained his face to stay pleasant and his voice to stay even, because back home in Carter’s Mill, people noticed when you weren’t pleasant and even, and then they asked about you, and then your mother heard about it at Wednesday night Bible study.

“Thank you,” he said, pleasant and even, and went to go meet the stranger he’d be undressing in front of for the next nine months.
