Chapter One: The Booking
The costume arrived on a Tuesday, which was the same day I realized I was completely fucked.
Not in the fun way. In the I-agreed-to-appear-shirtless-in-front-of-three-thousand-people-and-I-haven’t-done-a-push-up-since-high-school-gym-class way.
I held the leather harness up to the light of my bedroom window, turning it slowly. The straps were gorgeous — matte black, hand-stitched, with silver buckle hardware that caught the afternoon sun. The craftsman who made it had nailed every detail of Kaelvorn the Unbroken’s armor down to the asymmetric shoulder guard and the diagonal chest strap.
The problem was that Kaelvorn the Unbroken had the body of a man who’d been chiseled from marble by a sculptor with a praise kink. And I had the body of a man who’d been chiseled from a La-Z-Boy by three years of twelve-hour streaming sessions and a DoorDash addiction.
I set the harness down on my unmade bed and called Kira.
She picked up on the second ring, already eating something. “Tell me you didn’t try it on.”
“I didn’t try it on.”
“Liar. How bad?”
I looked at myself in the mirror on the back of my closet door. The harness was technically on. The straps crossed my chest and looped over my shoulders the way they were supposed to. On Kaelvorn, the harness framed pecs like stone slabs and a stomach you could wash laundry on. On me, it framed… a situation. A soft, pale, hasn’t-seen-direct-sunlight-in-months situation.
“Scale of one to ten?” I said.
“Give it to me.”
“Imagine a sausage in bondage gear.”
Kira choked on whatever she was eating. “Take it off.”
“Way ahead of you.” I wrestled free of the straps and tossed the harness back on the bed. “Kira, what the fuck was I thinking? NerdCon is ten weeks away. GuildForge is sending a photographer. This is the biggest panel I’ve ever been invited to and I’m supposed to stand on a stage next to CosplayKing_Jake, who literally looks like he was grown in a lab—”
“Mason.”
“—and I’m going to be up there looking like the before photo in a gym ad nobody asked for—”
“Mason.”
“—and the brand deal is contingent on this going well, Kira. ConQuestGear doesn’t sponsor streamers who show up looking like they’ve never touched a barbell. Which I haven’t. I literally have not touched a barbell.”
“MASON.”
I stopped talking. Breathed.
Kira’s face filled my phone screen, patient and merciless. “Hire a trainer.”
“Hire. A. Trainer. Ten weeks is plenty of time to not look like — what did you say? A sausage in bondage gear.”
She wasn’t wrong. That was the annoying thing about Kira. She was never wrong, and she was never gentle about it.
