5 Romance Bookstores Worth the Drive in Central New York & the Finger Lakes (2026)

Something quietly wonderful has been happening to the bookstore map of Central New York. In the space of about three years, a region that used to mean a long drive to a general-interest indie has sprouted a whole constellation of small, mostly women-owned shops — including the first romance-and-fantasy-only boutique in CNY, a bookshop with an actual pepper-rated spice shelf, and upstate’s first romance-specific store. If you read what we publish, these are your people.
We’re an indie digital publisher — our catalog lives on Kindle Unlimited and wide ebook retailers rather than on physical shelves — but the health of romance as a genre runs through rooms like these: the events, the book clubs, the handseller who knows exactly which grumpy/sunshine hockey book you need next. So consider this our love letter. Five shops worth the drive, roughly west to east, plus the event that should be on your calendar right now.
First: The CNY Book Crawl Is July 10–19
Before the list — mark your calendar. The first-ever Central New York Book Crawl runs July 10–19, 2026, featuring seventeen independent bookstores across five counties. Readers pick up a passport, collect stamps at each participating shop, and enjoy special promotions along the way, with prizes for crawlers. Several of the stores below are participating — it’s the single best excuse of the summer to hit them all in one glorious loop.
1. Lit Actually — Baldwinsville, NY
The romance-and-fantasy-only one. Tucked upstairs at Olive’s Eatery at 25 Syracuse St. in the village of Baldwinsville, Lit Actually is the first boutique romance and fantasy bookshop in Central New York — opened in July 2025 with a line out the building. Founder Kelly Vann stocks the roughly 800-square-foot space exclusively with romance and fantasy, with a deliberate emphasis on local and diverse authors, LGBTQ+ stories included. The event calendar is genuinely ambitious for a shop this size: author nights with names like Stephanie Archer, themed romance nights with the Syracuse Crunch, book clubs, and pop-ups around town. The merch runs proudly cheeky — ask about the bookmarks.
Go for: a shop where every single shelf is your genre. If you loved our Behind the Net readalikes, this is the store that hosts that exact author.
2. That’s What She Read — Marcellus, NY
The one with the pepper-rated spice shelf. At 16 E. Main St. in Marcellus, this women-owned bookshop and boutique (established 2023) has grown from three rooms to five, mixing new, gently used, and vintage books with vintage giftware and a clothing room in the back. The detail that earns them a permanent place in our hearts: a dedicated spice shelf with pepper ratings, which is exactly the kind of honest heat labeling we advocate for in our spice-level guide. Purchases get wrapped with genuine care — books leave the shop looking like gifts even when the gift is to yourself.
Go for: treasure-hunt browsing across five rooms, and a spice shelf curated by people who clearly read what they sell.
3. Remi Reads — Weedsport, NY
The cozy one named after a very good dog. Inside Live a Little Boutique at 8934 N. Seneca St. in Weedsport, Remi Reads is a woman-owned bookstore that opened in July 2025, carrying a curated mix of new releases and gently loved used books across all genres, with local authors on the shelves. It’s named in memory of the owner’s beloved lab, Remi, and the whole 200-square-foot nook radiates that energy — it’s the kind of space built for wandering in for one book and leaving with four. Remi Reads is a confirmed stop on the CNY Book Crawl.
Go for: the used-book hunt — backlist romance at used prices is how every great trope binge starts — and the boutique next door.
4. Protagonist Books & Coffee — Dryden, NY
The queer-owned books-and-coffee one. At 8 W. Main St. in the village of Dryden, Protagonist Books & Coffee is a women-owned, queer-owned, author-owned bookstore and coffee shop — run by married authors Sam and Amber Gellar-Smith — that opened in September 2025 with a mission to be an inclusive “third space” where readers can find their story. The stock is fiction-focused with deliberate attention to diverse authors and voices, the coffee is real, and the events calendar (author signings, Fantasy Friday Nights, community collaborations) keeps the room busy. For readers of our Aurora North and Jace Wilder catalogs, a queer-owned shop that stocks with intention is worth every mile of the drive.
Go for: the coffee-and-browse afternoon, and a shop where LGBTQ+ romance isn’t a shelf — it’s a value.
5. Burn Bright Books — Rochester, NY
The romance-only pilgrimage. The longest drive on this list and arguably the most on-brand for our readers: Burn Bright Books opened in Rochester in April 2025 as the only romance-specific bookstore in upstate New York — and it proudly champions diverse and indie-published love stories. A store that puts indie-published romance on physical shelves is doing exactly the work this genre’s future depends on, and it deserves the gas money.
Go for: wall-to-wall romance, indie titles included — the closest thing upstate has to a romance reader’s homecoming.
Shop Local, Read Everywhere
Indie bookstores and indie publishers are two halves of the same ecosystem — the shops keep romance a community, and digital-first catalogs like ours keep the genre’s weirdest, hottest, most niche corners alive. Support the stores above with your feet and your wallet; and when you’re home on the couch at 11 p.m. needing one more chapter, our entire catalog is free to browse on the free reads hub, with first chapters free on every book page and hours of free audio previews on our podcast. Hours and event calendars change — check each store’s website or socials before making the drive.
Fractal Enigma has no affiliation with the stores above — we just think they’re doing the good work. This post contains a Kindle Unlimited referral link; as an Amazon Associate, Fractal Enigma earns from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
